Glitched UI that leads to crash

Post by 1024mb »

I don't know how to reproduce this because, as far as I could see, this just happens out of the blue. I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary simply browsing or switching tabs.
First it starts with XYplorer's UI glitching like crazy, like parts of the screen disappear (the dark background is visible though) or the whole UI it's misplaced to one side of the screen (though again the background remains dark for the parts that are missing the UI) and the more I move the cursor the more things are glitchy. So far I had to close and reopen XYplorer but just this time the app simply crashed withing seconds of glitching out. This is what I got in event viewer:

Code: Select all

This has been happening for several weeks/versions now, though I don't know which version started this. But I do have another portable instance using 27.10.0004 working without problems.

Also sometimes it starts to glitch but it simply returns back to normal, I thought it was the video driver but I have updated it twice already and this keeps happening even though other apps that are GPU intensive don't crash nor glitch.

Btw I have checked the hash of the DLL and it matches (https://strontic.github.io/xcyclopedia/ ... 23E74.html).

I'm using Windows 10, scaling is at 100% on both monitors, I had been using 125% scaling on the second monitor before but already changed that to the default 100% a week or two ago, I don't know if that matters. 1080p both monitors.

The problems you are experiencing are with version 27.90.0.27, the 64-bit beta. If 27.10.0004 (32-bit) is working without issue, then the problem is clearly specific to the 64-bit version. However, nobody else has reported such extreme failures. This will be difficult to tackle. :(

hmm also experiencing UI glitching out of nowhere , during basic browsing and file managemet ...

i try to memorize next time the exact action i did ...
might be related to me jumping between folders via custom fx .
might be i send the fx cmd too fast while its fetching or creating Thumbs (32bit does shows an error message if its thumbing , but then continues thumbing , no crash)

after such a glitch its non restorable , have to restart the app.

"during basic browsing and file managemet" and "custom fx" ... Your descriptions are not helpful. If you cannot provide clear steps for reproducing the issue, I cannot do anything.

Greetings and forgive me for necroing this thread, but i'm experiencing this UI flickering due to hoverbox rendering that bossi described and i can describe how to reproduce it.
XYplorer Version: 28.30.0100 64-bit
Windows Version: 11
Monitors Resolution and Scaling:
1) Laptop Internal Display: 1920x1080 @ 144Hz Scale 125%
2) External Monitor (Primary): 1920x1080 @ 143.85Hz Scale 125%

This flickering occurs only in 64-bit and only if the hoverbox is rendered on the 2nd (primary) monitor above.
This is true even if the XYplorer window is placed such that half of it is rendered on the first monitor and the other half on the other; if the hoverbox is rendered on the 1st monitor, there is no flickering, but each time it is rendered on the second monitor there is an instant flickering.
By flickering i mean that all icons in the main toolbar and all elements in the tab bar (including the breadcrumb line) disappear for an instant, leaving the background color visible.
No other elements of the UI seem to be affected.
It may seem negligible, and perhaps with certain UI configurations it may be unnoticeable. However, if hoverbox is set to display upon hovering icons/names at a small delay (e.g. up to 250ms) and you run the cursor across the folders in the tree or list, the flickering should quickly become obvious.
I have set the hoverbox to display when hovering on icons, and tooltip when hovering on names, but playing around with these options reveals that it is the hoverbox that causes the flickering upon being rendered on the 2nd monitor above, no matter how it is invoked or what it tries to preview.
This is true even if the hoverbox displays "folder is empty".

Please tell me if you need more help in reproducing this issue and I will be happy to provide it, for XYplorer is certainly the greatest software ever made, but this has been driving me mad for months and i dont wanna revert back to 32-bit

Thanks for the report. The 64-bit version is written in a brand-new language called twinBASIC that still has a couple of issues with multi-monitor setups. They should be fixed within this year.

My pleasure to try to help. However, i should also mention that the issue is no longer reproducible on my end, no matter what i try. I havent made any changes to my system, neither hardware nor software, save for a windows update or too, yet there is flickering no longer. :?

Okay. Could it be that Windows has a couple of issues, too?

Windows having issues? now that would be unheard of /s

I dont know whether this is relevant, but attempting to reproc the bug revealed a difference in the behaviour of the hoverbox vs the tooltip, and in particular their choice of which monitor to render on: under specific circumstances they display a different preference, which i'll try to demonstrate below with 2 pairs of screenshots (tooltip and hoverbox on each monitor).

XYplorer is positioned so as to be displayed partly in both monitors, with both columns of folder and files in the List view displayed on the left monitor, as shown in the first pair of screenshots. The tooltip of the hovered folder (Cat Quest 3) is displayed on the left monitor.
Tooltip_Left.png
Tooltip_Right.png
However, as shown in the second pair of screenshots, the hoverbox of that same folder is rendered on the right monitor, unlike its tooltip, despite there being ample space on the left monitor too. Note that this is true whatever the hoverbox is displaying (i.e. folder contents or "folder is empty").
Hoverbox_Left.png
Hoverbox_Right.png
Enlarging the window towards left makes both tooltip and hoverbox display on the same (left) monitor again, but it's curious how at a certain threshold their rendering preference diverges.

Dunno if this is related to the aforementioned "flickering issue" at all, which btw i have still been unable to replicate, but it is reminded that the issue would occur only when rendering the hoverbox, not the tooltip.

I will check the hover box placement once twinBASIC has fixed its multi monitor issues.

But I see something else in your screenshots: what's going on with your tree, list, and catalog icons??? Much too large. This is Win11 at 125%?

Yes, but perhaps they appear so because of the window size and placement. Here's a shot of XYplorer in its proper, single-monitor, maximized glory.
