double-click on a pic, opening the image in full screen? REBORN :)

Post by FlyAway »

Ciao :)

To get back to the topic, I downloaded the latest version to see if anything has changed. I've tried a lot of programs over the past few months, and I can say that Xyplorer is truly the best on the market. Kudos to the developer/s who wrote it.
Unfortunately, however, it seems like things haven't changed when it comes to photo management. Here are my personal observations, which I hope won't offend anyone:

1 - Upon startup, the program (rightly) maintains associations with the default programs. In my case, for example, it opens photos with xnview. All good, but the very first option in the settings should be the option to set Xyplorer as the default program for: And underneath there should be a list of file types to choose from.
But doing so is a real nightmare :(

2 - The window that opens with the enlarged photo isn't integrated into xyplorer and really feels like something glued on.

3 - I don't see the scroll bar, not even the toolbar, there's no way to set a custom zoom level other than the preset ones, and the double-click to return to thumbnail view isn't there yet.

4 - I still find MDBU a waste of code because it's not necessary. Anyone who has a photo to look at takes the same amount of time to double-click on the photo and see the photo with the option to zoom in and do whatever they want. Those who have a lot of photos (like almost everyone) don't even think about using MDBU.

From my point of view, a file explorer should take the best from various viewers, and if the best ones for photos don't use MDBU, perhaps it's time to copy their functionality, which is designed for those who like to organize their photos. After all, a file explorer doesn't do much except display photos, videos, and Texts and these things must be done by taking a better model in that specific sector.

Thanks :)

Small bug: If I enlarged the fonts (set them to 14) and pressed F12 with the photo selected, the fonts in the panel that appears are cropped, as are some parts of the options. I'm using Windows 11, 2560x1440, with text resizing and zooming at 150%.

I'm not an XY Pro User, but for me, when I double-click a picture, it opens in IrfanView. When I open it in XY (using F11 for Preview), I can right-click it to bring up a context menu.
Besides that, most of what I’ve learned about XY (I came from Total Commander) comes from the Tour Guide and the Quick Start Guide.
In my opinion, there is no other tool where the developer puts so much effort into explaining how to use it as the author of XY does.

Yes, thanks. I wrote that, for example, image zoom can only be set to predefined presets, and you can access those from the context menu. I don't think so elsewhere. My feeling is that it's something tacked on to provide a function that isn't natively there, and unfortunately, at least for me, it's obvious. :(

I often need to view a specific image after selecting multiple images. MDBU has been a great help.
For viewing with an external program, I wrote an AutoHotkey script:
[AutoHotkey v2] Link XY (track selection) to run the specified program to open the current item
(I actually don’t use it. I use Floating Preview instead.)

I understand, I don't claim to speak for everyone. I understand that some might find it useful, but you'll admit that it's a fairly rare use; otherwise, other PicsView programs would have included it... and perhaps it's also the variety of options that Xyplorer offers that makes it so popular. For me, it's still useless, but I'm absolutely not asking for it to be eliminated; I'd simply like to see the other features introduced.
On various scripts, thanks, but I don't want to have two programs :)
