Looking for a New Host

Post by admin »

You may have noticed performance and availability issues with the website and forum in recent weeks. These issues were caused by HostEurope's migration of our webspace to cPanel and our email to Office 365. The migration was poorly communicated and implemented. Once completed, many things worsened and nothing improved.

Yesterday, we contacted HostEurope support and asked them to resolve the situation. Their response was so inadequate that it's clear this company is a sinking ship. Therefore, we are looking for a new provider, preferably in Germany. Does anyone here have personal experience with Ionos?

I have two Ionos servers since probably a year. No issues so far
Another Netcup server since several years, no problems either

But all my servers are VPS, not webhosting (so I administrate them myself)

This weekend, xyplorer.com will move to Ionos. Expect some downtime. :cup:

In the process of... takes 120 hours for the final switch, so that's supposed to happen on Thursday. Gives me time for moving the gigabytes to the right places.

Hmm, looks like most attached images and ZIPs in older posts don't work anymore? :maf:

Seems so :naughty: Interestingly in posts where a .zip / .xys was attached recently even very old attachments still work, e.g.: viewtopic.php?t=12662

Okay, I found out what happened. When downloading the files from the old provider they were incorrectly treated as text files instead of binary files and line endings (well, what looked like line endings) have been changed from 0A to 0D0A. This is an irreversible damage (replacing all 0D0A by 0A would fix some but not all).

I now try to re-download the files (about 10,000 files, total of 1.65 GB) which is a bit tricky because of the DNS changes due to the provider switch. Damn... :maf:

PS: I guess the files that still work did not contain a single 0A byte. :)
