Preview PDF-Files

Post by Rollschuh »

Is it possible to add PDF format files to Trackers preview?

PS: Thumbnail-function is great! :)

Hi Rollschuh,

this has been wished in vain before (see http://www.trackerv3.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108 ), but today I tried to simply load a PDF into the HTML-preview, and it just worked! So, now we seem to have PDF-preview!

... but ...

I have Acrobat Reader 7.0 installed, and I wonder what will happen if that's not the case!? Please report everybody! (Wait until I have uploaded the new version, of course.)

I don't - I use Foxit Reader and it works perfectly. After a prompt that I am downloading a file (rather a strange message but I can disable it) it opens Foxit Reader in the TrackerV3 preview pane.
It's fantastic!

I'm still using Acrobat 6.0 Prof. and it works as well with that version.
Just the load time of Acrobat is a bit annoying, if you click on a PDF by mistake, while preview is active, and apparently there's no way to interrupt it, or is there?

Thanks
Ralph :)

Have you looked at the Foxit Reader? http://www.foxitsoftware.com It's very fast and I'm not aware of any problems with it. I use it as my default reader because I found Acrobat so slow to load.

No way to interrupt, right.

Maybe I should make the IE-previewed file types configurable? These extensions are previewed through IE right now:
".htm.html.shtml.mht.php.php3.php4.asp.xml.swf.svg.svgz.url.pdf."

Another option under "Configuration | Previewed Formats" would do no harm, if it's not a lot of work to implement it.

Have you considered upgrading Acrobat to 7.xx ? It load documents times faster then version 6.xx thanks to a new conception: some little portion of bits stays in memory as a resident module. It is not advertisement only, but I have checked it myself.

Have you guys heard of PdfSpeedup http://www.acropdf.com/ ? It's a cool freeware app that allows you to selectively disable mostly unused features of Acrobat, which increases it's load time by an order of magnitude. I love this little app!

I just wanted to mention that as soon as you have used the pdf preview once adobe Acrobat (reader or pro, whatever is installed) is loaded and stays that way!

So even if you exit TV3 it doesn't exit. This does make loading the next preview fast (even after closing and restarting of TV3) but since it takes 20 MB of memory it would probably be a good idea to close acrobat on closing of TV3 as well.
Don't implement it for me though, I just disabled PDF previews since I don't need/want it, I just saw it and thought maybe you didn't know but might want to :)

did I mention I love the the program?? great work!

bye

I know, but I cannot do anything about it, it's a known "feature" of IE/Acrobat Reader: the IE embedded Acrobat Reader stays in memory after you close that instance of IE. TrackerV3 never references Acrobat Reader directly but lets IE do it. If IE does not close it, nobody does. Which is the case.
