Absolute Network Address

Post by kirklarsen »

I saw a previous post about this, but did not see a resolution.

The one glaring problem that I have with no workaround is networking. For instance, in Windows Explorer, you can go to the Address Bar and type in //Computer/Directory and it will go there. I don't see any way to do this in Tracker at the moment. I know that you can browse to it, but if you have a large number of machines, it is cumbersome. It would be really nice to have this feature either built into the current "Go To" window or possibly in a new "Go to Network Location" window. Also, auto-complete is a must-have for this type of functionality.

With that said, I want to congratulate you on a very nice product!

If you type //Computer/Directory into the Go to box, it should take you there!

I agree about auto-complete and also plan to add an MRU-combo as in the Name field on the Find Files tab.

When I try to get to a network address this way, Tracker won't display any files. If I enter a valid path ("\\computer\directory\"), the tab title will change to "Desktop" and the file list just goes blank. If I enter an invalid path ("\\computer\not\a\valid\path\"), it will show an error saying it can't find the path (as expected). Any ideas?

Thanks for an awesome program!

Edit: Actually, nothing at all shows up when I browse to "Network". In Windows Explorer, I can see items as normal.

I have seen this too. You have to first go to Explorer and open up a network path before it becomes visible/available to Tracker. Otherwise, you are taken to the desktop as you say.

Unfortunately I cannot reproduce this. Maybe it is due to your particular type of network? I'm just wondering that only very few users report this problem.

Yes, this is as programmed. I found this information as superfluous so I just left out

Interesting. Can anybody else confirm this?

When on a normal Windows network, it does seem to work fine. I can view the other PCs on the network in Tracker without needing to see them in Explorer first.

It appears I only have problems when trying to view a NetWare-based network. This is when it goes blank and I can't browse to network paths. Even after viewing the network in Explorer first, it doesn't show in Tracker.

This happens on my home network, which is just two machines on a plain ole' workgroup. In fact, I can't even open up network neighborhood in Tracker and browse to Stewie (sometimes), I have to do that first in Explorer.

Hm hm, so we're not talking about the Go to box (resp. Absolute Network Address) anymore but about general (in)accessibility of certain network locations.

From v3.60.0146 - 22.03.05 14:23 - onwards I have totally rewritten the network neighborhood and gained considerable performance. Maybe I lost functionality at the same time?
To find out you might try this version, which still has the old network code:

Thanks
