Accessing network shares

Post by mumajs »

That is something what I am fighting years and I decided to share my experience. There are often good improvements to XYplorer, but last months just cosmetic for limited groups of users. I can not be only one who is experiencing this terrible network shares behaviour.. so lets start

Hi Don,
Any plans to completely rewrite the network shares access in xyplorer? They are probably old and wrong. I owen licenses also for alternative file managers.. Lets call them AFM (total commamder, freecommamder, directory opus). Xyplorer from the scratch opens any network share in many seconds, doing some internal work, delay, trying to investigate something... However AFM opens it immediately, almost smooth with the enter key. I have to enable these network features to be closer to AFM but it is never fast like them.
"Assume that servers are available" and "cache network servers".
Now I can open the share almost like AFM but browsing is very big pain. Moving from folder to folder (when it contains a lot of executable files) is making XYP frozen, completely. Then I found out that "use generic icons" helps in that case. Ok! Now the most terrible case. If I start to have new network device, NAS, new server on the network and I got credentials for it I am never able to access it via XYP. It never ask me for credentials. It says location is not available where AFM ask me for credentials in few seconds and I can open it in another two seconds. XYP? No way, just error. I have to put the location to explorer and then I can use XYP. Really? In 2023? There must be way how to handle all network shares as AFM because they can do that and all in the almost same successfull way! XYP is doing something old/wrong and I would like to have it improved. Have it better than AFM!

If "Assume that servers are available" is enabled you don't get a logon prompt by definition.

Anyway, thanks for the report. But I'm not sure what I could improve, XY uses the latest API according to MS docs. Anyway, I'll keep an eye on it. (BTW, XY network browsing here is totally fast.)
