Search in separate process.

Post by eil »

Recent CES addition reminded me an idea i have since long ago, so decided to state it.
I never had much problems with XY being not multi-thread app, the only things i lacked were running scripts and searches in background. As i understand sending script in second instance is already possible, so some things can sorta be emulated as background processing. Though i'd wish this become more user friendly to allow sending some stuff that usually may occupy XY for long(like creating thumbs for huge folder), to background instance.

Now finally to main topic - how about modifying XY to be able to send search tasks outsource? This could be a separate .exe, like in case with XY Copy, or maybe starting a temporary second instance of background XY, acquiring the results and showing them in Search tab. The main issue with current Search is that you can't leave the tab till the end of a search, which may take some time in large scale locations/drives. Yet since XY already has ability to cache results of the search, keeping the tab with results, the only thing lacking is a way allowing somehow for user not be forced to stay in Search Tab for search to keep happening.
I presume Don would already make some magic to not make user wait in the Search Tab, if it could be done in same one process, that's why such "pseudo multi processing" could work it out.

There are plans for a shadow instance (you will find it mentioned here in the forum). This will take care of it.
