My padding was 0
However, I tested with padding 1 and border 0 and got the same two pixels.
But obviously this time with white color.

Apparently, mine was always 2 pixels which is fine for me. I tried a number of different combinations and wasn't able to get anything smaller than what I have in my pic viewtopic.php?p=200996#p200996 unless I'm missing some other setting or tweak I've forgotten about.

Edit: I'm not sure now if the Beta note that states is correct.
* Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | Show folder thumbnails: Removed the hard
1-pixel border. Now all is controlled by above new tweak. If you want the 1 pixel
margin back, set the tweak to 1.
Whether you have padding "0" with border "1"
or
padding "1" and border "0", the result is the same...which is apparently 2 pixels not 1 ?

Before 20220723, folder thumbnails had a 1-pixel outer margin. This resulted in an apparent 1-pixel distance between folder thumbnails when the padding was zero because the adjacent outer margins were painted on top of each other. That was a dirty side-effect. Now the margins are all inner margins. Therefore you will get zero distance on zero padding, and a 2-pixel distance on 1-pixel-padding.

The older way though had one advantage: The thumbnail did not have to be shrunk (shrinking costs energy, time and quality). So, for the sake of energy, time, quality, and tradition, I will go back to the 1-pixel outer margin for folder thumbnails. :) The clrFolderThumbsBorderWidth tweak will be added to that 1-pixel margin.

Thanks Don for Beta v23.30.0206. It is nice to have this additional flexibility. I'll probably use that tweak setting of clrFolderThumbsBorderWidth to -1. Though since I have all my folder thumbnail colors as all white (or all black), I suppose it doesn't make a difference in my case. :) :appl:

Thanks so much for the tweak, Don, but it's not working for me. Here's what I'm doing and what's happening:

Close XY.
Open xyplorer.ini.
Add tweak (to General section) clrFolderThumbsBorderWidth=8
Save and close xyplorer.ini.
Open XY.
Thumbnail border has not changed.
Close XY.
Open xyplorer.ini.
Tweak has changed to clrFolderThumbsBorderWidth=0

Any idea what the problem is? Am I doing something wrong?

Take a look at these instructions on How to Tweak here. https://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=tweak

You don't have to add the add the tweak. You only have to find it (it's there already), clrFolderThumbsBorderWidth and change the setting after the "=". This tweak is not in the General section, it's located in the [Thumbs] section.

Oh thank you! :appl: I do know how to tweak. However, I didn't realise there was a Thumbs section, which shows how often I use tweaks. It might be helpful if the changelog actually specified which section a tweak goes in. I have it working now.

Well, that would be more work for Don. It's quickest to just open XYplorer.ini and do a search or find for the tweak. Glad you got it working. :)
