Sorry, I don't like hidden things especially if they DO things, so a click where the "-" used to be should still collapse it?
And all of this just to save a few pixels?

Both options are already in XY, but for the Tree. So IMO they make sense for the Catalog, too.
But don't worry, if these get implemented they will be optional, tweaks probably.
