Dual Pane

Post by mikes16 »

Hi-

I am new to the product - I am currently at the point where my Directory Opus license is about to expire, and I am trying new software.

So far- I LOVE this product - DoPus is overkill for my needs, I am not using the functionality in that tool.

One thing I miss - Dual Pane. In DoPus I have a layout setup that opens a dual pane layout, each pane containing multiple tabs.

I would like to see this functionality in this tool - is it under development?

If it is - I will purchase right away - the other benefits of XYPlorer will be enough that I can wait as long as I know it is being worked on.

Thanks for the info - great product!

** EDIT ** found this on the Wiki, which is very nice. I am not yet convinced I can operate as productively without dual-panes - but I have an open mind, and I will try.

Cut from the WIKI site
Can I Have A Dual Pane ?

No. XYplorer is not - and will not be - a dual pane file manager. However, it uses the very well-known & appreciated system of Tabbed Browsing. While pretty much everyone recognize how great it is for Internet browsing, when it comes to file manager the good old myth that a dual panel is a must is still very strong, probably because it was such a hit back in the DOS days.

But let's face it, DOS is dead! ;) We are using Windows now, and with its GUI a dual pane really isn't that great no more. With Tabbed Browsing you will be bale to have an unlimited numbers of Browsing Tabs and Finding Tabs opened at the same time, easily switch from one to another and interact with them very easily, drop files on them, lock them to a specific location or their Home, and many many more features that makes it way more powerful than a dual pane.
I will try. Can I setup 1 click to open two specific tabs at the same time? Then I could do a "copy to" - but I like in Dopus being able to 1 click open two directories and then I drag and drop files between them often.

I believe that Don has said he will be adding Dual-Pane support at some point in the not-too-distant future, so I think you'll get that wish...

It'll definitely be a nice thing. I think it will be a major selling feature since many of the folks looking for a new file manager seem to view dual pane as a necessity, and don't even try XY since it doesn't have that functionality.

Welcome to the wonderful world of XY -- Don is one of the (if not the) most responsive developers on the planet!

enjoy!

Yes, dual pane is coming soon. How soon I am not sure. But to get an idea of whats coming next keep an eye on the XYplorer Roadmap.

FYI, unlike Dopus' licence XY's licence doesnt expire. Its a lifetime commitment. 8)

mikes16: Welcome to the XY forums! And yes, dual-pane definitely appears to be on the plans for future development! Search this forum for "dual pane" and you'll find numerous hits/threads about it!

And you'll find that Don is often VERY quick to implement little features that help make XY better...another new user asked for TGA support, and within two weeks, it has been added.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

I see that - I am glad I switched from DoPus already.

XYPlorer seems to react quicker too.

I'm starting to be fascinated by this dualpanemania! There are about 2 million DP file managers out there an everybody wants XY to be DP, too. What is this, something psycho? mass neurosis? aren't there some substances that give you that DP feeling?

I would just look at it as a nice intuative feature. At least have the option, it could even be disabled by default in the preferences.

Dual Panemania FTW

Why? It's all true! I'll add DP just for promotional reasons, not because it's good. :P

Given that a single pane user will readily buy a SP/DP product,
But a dedicated dual pane user likely will never try/buy a SP only product,
It makes financial sense to open up that portion of the market.

After all, look what happened to the newer Mac's! They now (via BootCamp) can run both OS X and Windows...given how devoted to the Mac OS those Apple-ites are, I think it's similar to this situation...

Yeah, add it for promotional reasons.
But I think in the end the users of software will be the best judge. If dual pane (DP) is really something then it will stick on, else users will dump it for XY's old ideology.
I would actually want to test the dual pane to see how much of a difference it would really make. I already can see a post called DP vs anti-DP.

Well this is obviously going to be wrong in a week. XY will be DP then...
