OT: I've been scammed. Hope you can help

Post by jadinolf »

This is embarrassing but this morning after installing the latest version of XYplorer I went to a .zip file and was offered the opportunity to install a zip/unzip program. I thought this was related to XYplorer - it was not. I uninstalled the program but unfortunately, I then lost the right click "Extract all..." on a .zip file and a reinstall did not correct this.

Sounds like I am in big trouble but I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

I just tried the no install version. No difference. :(

Loosing a menu in right click is not something terrible. You can try:
- Install another .zip extractor (7-zip is free)
- Use command-line to extract instead of using right click (this depend on which un-zip profrom you use)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I guess I will install 7-zip.

I was hoping there was some way to make XYplorer "whole" again.

The right click shell menu is populated by Windows and therefore your XY was still "whole" just Windows wasn't, so to say...

I was afraid of that Ralph.

Do you think sfc /scannow might help?

- If Both Windows Explorer and XYplorer miss that menu in right click, then XYplorer is fine, the problem lie in Windows
- If ONLY XYplorer miss the menu, then you might be using Win 64bit and installed 64-bit version of the software correspond to that menu. Again, it's as expected, you will need 32-bit version of that software to show the menu in XYplorer

sfc is no use.
To manually edit the right click menu, use Nirsoft's ShellMenuView

Binocular, I downloaded both versions but I must confess that I am not computer savvy enough to know what to do with them.

I will need some time to figure it out.

Thanks again.

If you can't extract ZIPs in XY then that archive program you uninstalled removed some registry entries related to Windows zip extraction.

You can fix this easily if this is the case.

Open Notepad or any text editor and create a new file.

Copy and paste the following text into the new empty file.

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Save it with any name but make sure you save it with the file extension REG instead of TXT.

Double click to merge the keys or right click and choose merge from the context menu.

Should fix it.

I developed another problem with Windows Explorer after that so yesterday, I reinstalled Windows 7. Finished adding software today.

A lot of work but the results were excellent.

Thanks
