Bug or Wish? Does XY handle files needing Quick Time Player?

Post by j_c_hallgren »

Revisiting this with a twist: I'm wondering...does XY really handle video files for preview that require Apple Quick Time Player or not? There are various file extensions that are listed in Config that have the QT icon with them but when I try to preview a .MOV file (which opens/works just fine via QT on my sys), I get the "Cannot Decode" msg...just as I did with .MP4 file... :?

So...is anyone else having any problems like this? Given that WMP simply cannot process some of these file types, and as I can view them directly via QT, having XY be able to preview them would be a good thing, right?

I'm on W2K and thus am limited to WMP 9 as latest vers.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Well, I think basically XY can preview whatever the WMP can play, as they uses the same codecs & stuff.

I personnally do not have nor use WMP cause I hate it  and there's a very better player: small, fast, free, works great, a dream! :D If you dont have it go get it now!! ;)
 Media player Classic

And you can go get it from here, comes with a QuickTime alternative codec, so it can play QuickTime files too! :D Works well, I can play MOV files with MPC, and I also preview them fine in XY :D

ps: VLC is another awesome player, that doesn't use Windows codecs but comes with its own stuff and plays pretty much everything. Another excellent soft to have 8)

As a good user of this forum, I'll restart this ancient thread instead of making a new one...because...I ran into this MP4 problem again just now and was confused as to best way to solve the problem...

Now for some details that may apply:
Given that I'm on W2K, my choices are rather limited in what I can use, but I am able to play this MP4 file directly via Quick Time Player 7.1.6 (latest for this system but obsolete for most) or via Media Player Classic 6.4.9...

If I do Open With>IE in Win Expl, it works also as it invokes QT to do it...I can also do an Open With>VLC successfully...however, when I attempt to use WMP (my latest possible vers is 9.0 due to W2K), it does fail..

Thus is there any way to get it to work in XY preview?

BTW, my config in XY shows MP4 as having the QT icon so it seems to be associated with QT somewhat.

I can't answer the question but for me QuickTime has a long tradition of failing to work under any Windows system, so I'm not surprised.
