Dupes filter is not finding name.tif and name.jpg
I'm trying to use the Dupes filter to fine files in a single directory that have the same file name but different extension.
So:
it would find b, below.
But it's not doing that.
a.jpg
b.jpg
b.tif
c.jpg
When I use the Find> Dupes filter checking only name (and applied filters: dupes, only) I get no results.
But I KNOW there is at least one dupe:
cake.jpg
cake.tif
Am I doing something wrong?

OK.
So, what is "find dupe names" designed to find?
My understanding is that it's for use in a single folder. What is an example of a dupe it might find?

Dupes in different folders (obviously).

Back to your original problem...
You're not actually trying to find duplicate files but rather ones that have the same base name right?
cake.jpg and cake.tif have different content and likely sizes, correct?

Correct. Just looking for duplicated file BASE name. (cake.jpg and cake.tiff).
Any suggestions?

Re: Dupes filter is not finding name.tif and name.jpg
Ideally, Don could add either a "Base name" or "Ignore extension" option to the dupe finder to handle this, but I'm not sure there's a big enough need to convince him of this.MrAnalogy wrote:Any suggestions?
Aside from a scripting solution... I have one other thought.
I'm making two assumptions:
- The items are all located in C:\Directory.
- You're converting tifs to jpgs and want to identify which ones have been converted.
- In pane 1, browse to the directory and filter it by '*.jpg'. [Menu: 'View' > 'Tab' > 'Set Visual Filter' or Shortcut: enter 'C:\Directory|*.jpg' into the address bar.]
- In pane 2, browse to the directory.
- With pane 2 still active select menu 'Panes' > 'Sync Select'.
- In the 'Dual Pane: Sync Select' dialog:
- Choose 'Select Matches'
- Ensure 'Ignore Extensions' is checked.
- Hit 'OK'.
Between filtering and the other options in Sync Select there's a lot you can accomplish as far as identifying unique/duplicate items based on name and modification times, but it's not exactly intuitive* and certainly not as easy as a Base Names in the Dupe finder would be.
Does that help?
* The use of the pieces may all be intuitive but knowing how to string them together to achieve a specific goal is not. Just in case anyone was about to take offense to that.

Yes, if TheQwerty's assumptions are right then the workflow he described is the best thing you can do. I actually did it myself in the past when I had to find unique items among several others differing only by extension.

Well,
this might be a good reason to drop some words of appraisal.
One reason why the XY community is such a great place to be is its heart made of a truly phantastic bunch of members. People who are devoted to XY and the goal to really help others no matter how "strange" their concern might appear at first sight. Whose taking their time to really find out what the actual concern might be, asking the right questions in case of ambiguity, and finally coming up with elaborated answers and solutions, quite often embedded into tutorial-like replies.
I don't put names here, but I'm sure the ones I'm addressing here will surely know.
So, let me close with a simple: thank you very much "core crowd" for being so helpful and patient all the time.
Cheers,
Filehero

Yes, Filehero, I should have probably said that before you did it (but I'm coding all the time -- cool excuse
). I surprises me every day that people do that kind of deep quality support for free!

I think they all have one, and it would somehow devalue the greatness of it. The universe will care for the payback.Filehero wrote:You're absolutely right. You should spent them some free lifetime licenses.![]()

Hi'
I'm late to the game, and it's just a follow-up to what's already been said, but I have the same use quite regularly with RAW and JPG folders, and also in general for basic updates.
So here's what's been suggested in a simple menu form (excerpt from my PowerSelect button, so sorry for lack of comments or revision).
The entries I use most frequently are:
"Mirror Selection in Other Pane" (basename only) - very useful!
"Select Difference (Between Panes)" - id
"Select Same Basename (Between Panes)" - the one for your TIF/JPG needs

Wow, that's what I call cryptic scripting. You should remove the line feeds to make it even more intimidating.

Re: Dupes filter is not finding name.tif and name.jpg
I plead guilty, did this a long time ago, and since it's not even "scripting" but just a list of commands, I didn't bother commenting them at that time...
Well, I should review (and rewrite) most of my scripts anyway!
... and create nice "release notes" too!
