No, I just checked page 379 of the pdf help.

1) tried with V11.90.0224 - same error reported.

2) new is documented as a function, and functions have form new(...)
(The return value is the real name of the created file.)

By the way, to:

 New ("$newFile");

A variable *can* be specified in double quotes. This way it's more easy to combine variables with constant text, as e.g. "$name.txt". Else it had to be $name.".txt"
But it doesn't make sense for me to put a pure variable in quotes. So I'd code:
