Donations to poor translators...

Post by Borut »

In recent weeks I was contemplating about Don's offer to position a kind of "Donate to translator" buttons on the .lng download page. There was not much echo on Don's idea and not many are interested, as far as I can see.

Since paypal is actually not my taste, I was considering a link to my Amazon Wish List. Actually, apart from completely public and completely private wish lists, Amazon offers a middle way: A wish list owner gets a link and can send it around. Anyone who receives this link obtains in this way access to the wish list.

Hmmm?! I was not quite happy with this idea too, because making such a link public on any page would make it accessible also to search machines. (Of course, a "nofolow" and such things would be thinkable, but... too complex.)

In the meantime a change of XYplorer's MLS strategy took place: Now there is this new ultra cool "Download Language File..." functionality! Never ever will there be a need for any user to surf to a language download page.

So what would you all say about giving a user some totally unobtrusive possibility to click some kind of a donation link directly from the program? Maybe the most adequate moment would be immediately after a successful download of a .lng file (or some info/link in the status line, if started with an active translation)?

If no one finds this idea worth of implementation - no problem for me whatsoever. On the other hand, I have some really interesting books on my wish list... :P I guess I'll buy them myself in the end. :wink:

Well, at least you made me curious about your book wish list. :)

There are 4 fields in the LNG file that can be used by the translator:
Translator=Donald Lessau
Email=support@xyplorer.com
Website=http://www.xyplorer.com/
Comments=Default language file. Use as start point for creating translations and adding annotations.

Additionally I could add the languages.php page to menu Help / Online Support.

(I don't think that popping a donation link right after download is a good idea. Most people don't like that.)
