Catalog Addition

Post by John Bee »

Hi Don;

This is concerning the Catalog function of XY.

When I download files from the Net, they all get put into a master folder called 'NetDLoads'.
And in this folder I have subfolders to segregate the files according to what they are, for example:

AntiVirus
Benchmarks
BootCDs
CPU
Delphi
Demos
DesktopEnhancements
DVD-CDRW
Emulators
Financial
Games
Graphics
HardDrive
Health
Info
Internet
Joystick
Linux
Microsoft
Misc
Modems
Motherboard
Mouse
Music
OpenOffice
PalmPilot
Printer
Programming
Scanner
Screensavers
Security
Sound
UPS
Utils
Video
Win2K

When I move the files to the proper slot, I right-click, slide up to Move/Copy/Backup To, select Move To, and slide down to the favorites I have setup (7 of em). This sure was better that scrolling the tree around to the proper folder, opening it to another subsubfolder, etc and dragNdrop'ng them there.

Then I started looking into that there Catalog thingy, and I put all my favs in there, and now its just a short left slide and I accomplish the same thing as above. Much better, faster, less clicking and scrolling to doing the same thing. Just great! (Yes, yes, I am sometimes late to the party :) )

And today, I was looking at it again, this time, at the Favorite Files. According to the help file, it is the same as the Favorite Folders, only the file is hi-lited in the listview when you click on the File Entry in the Catalog window. Ok, that's good, just a jab on the enter key to activate the file (in this case an .exe, so the program starts up).

How about this, a single click on the File Entry does the above (as now), but a 'double-click' on the File Entry in the Catalog window activates/runs the file. Now we have a program launcher, and we can get rid of yet another separate program.

Just a thought.

You can actually already get rid of another separate program and use XY & its Catalog that way ;) If you prefix the Destination properties of your item with file:/// then a signe-click on it will not browse to the file but open it with the associated application.

eg.
file:///C:\Somewhere\TODO.txt will open TODO.txt in notepad or whatever you have TXT file associated with
file:///C:\WINDOWS\system32\calc.exe will start the Calculator
and btw:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/index.php will get you here in your default browser in one click!

What I'd love is for thoose file:/// items to support drop, but I already said that ;)

Hi Jacky;

God..., please don't tell me that was in the Help somewhere.

And thanks a lot. :D (XY and Don comes thru again!)

EDIT: this works great, however I notice that when I prefix the file:/// to the filename, the icon changes to a Internet Explorer Document icon and I lose the original file's icon. Anyway to stop that from happening because it was easy to spot the programs from one another, and from non-program files.

I stopped it from happening. However, now you cannot quickly distinguish normal "browse-items" from "run-items". Later I will add some overlay to the icon...

Seems you're obsessed with the start up time. Shall I add an option to auto-copy it to the clipboard on start up?

Hi Don;

Actually it is more just for info. I think there was a thread on the length of time XY took to load. Someone was concerned about how long XY was taking to load for them.

So I decided to keep track (sorta) of my start up times. Some tabs are homed to large amounts of folders/files and other tabs are not.

Note: I have 'show folder sizes in file list' and 'report disk space used' always on. Gotta know those folder sizes. I know this makes XY slower but I don't mind too much. Mind you, if you want to speed that up..... 8)
