:info: Please include the following information:
1) Your XYplorer Version (e.g., v28.00.0801)
2) Your Windows Version (e.g., Win 11)
3) Your Screen Scaling Percentage (e.g., 125%).

:info: We strongly recommend adding your Windows Version and Screen Scaling Percentage to the Location field in your Profile or to your Signature. That way, you only have to type them once, and we won't have to search for that vital information.

Desktop issues

Post by surrender »

I dont know if this is normal, but sometimes after installing a new application like 'yahoo intellisync' or 'paint.net' the shortcut is not visible on XY's desktop folder. While after installing other applications like 'freshdiagnose' i could see the shortcut. Does anybody have any idea why this is so??

Also, is it possible to see the real desktop in XY?? like in explorer one can see my computer, recycle bin, my documents etc.

There's a desktop for each (resp. the currently logged on) user (CSIDL_DESKTOP) and one for all users (CSIDL_COMMON_DESKTOPDIRECTORY). The same is true for Start Menu, Favorites and other folders. XY always shows the per-user one.

Some programs install as common, some as per-user, and put their shortcuts only in one of the desktops.

Real desktop? Nothing is real, not in a computer at least. The "desktop" is just another folder in your local file system which in my understanding is on your computer. Therefore I have put the Desktop under MyComputer and not vice versa as Explorer and all other file manager do. I find it much more practical like this. Even if it's not "real"...

I agree, putting desktop under My computer is logical.

I guess what he means is: could XYplorer display the 'merged desktop' as Explorer does (on the 'real' desktop as well as on the tree-item in the file manager), displaying the contents of both directories (per user and shared). Ok you might wanna keep "My computer" away from it to avoid cycles, but other than that...

I don't use it, but I can imagine it might be confusing not so see everything on your desktop that you're used to having there. Most users might not know that it's based on two folders.
Many games (Civ4 for example) put their shortcuts in the shared one and therefore don't appear in XYplorer.

bye

Ahhh! Ok, now I get that "real" of surrender, sorry for my muddy brain, the heat...

Having items from two or more locations listed in one folder in browse mode is not currently possible. It would only work as a match-all multi-location search's results. I have vague future plans for "action folders" (that do a lot more than just listing there contents), but this is another story...
So currently, I could only offer an option to display either one or the other desktop, and I could add the shared desktop's real path to menu Favorites/Special System Folders

Right now, i am happy with having all the desktops on my catalog. Best alternative is to have a 'common desktop' which you say is not possible. So dont care too much, its not that important.
