Wanted: Per-tab visual filter toggle

Post by avsfan »

I just recently discovered the Visual Filter option -- VERY useful! I now use it several times per hour doing code development!

To go along with the request for per-tab history, I'd love to have a per-tab visual filter list (at least the most recent used in that tab). I often need to look for a particular spec on a tab, and then switch to a different tab and look for something else. I'd like to be able to toggle each tab with its most recently used filter (though having a single list for all filters used would be just fine).

Piece of cake, right? :)

Thanks!

Sorry to follow up to my own post, but I was just thinking that what I meant in the last sentence of the second paragraph might not be clear.

What I was trying to say is that for the toggle (Ctl-Shift-J), I'd like the last filter used to saved for each tab, and that retaining the current method of keeping a single list for all filters works well (rather than having each tab have its own list of visual filters, though that could be a possibility as well for a future release).

Does this make sense? Does anyone else see value in this feature?

Another thought -- how about pre-defined filter lists with hotkey access? i.e. ctrl-J to bring up the filter list, then ctrl-a to get the first one, ctrl-b for the second, etc.. OK, maybe that's a bit much, but just brainstorming a bit here...

Still, though, I think the per-tab filter toggle would be great -- any opinions on this?

Thanks again -- XY ROCKS! :)

Yes, although I can imagine (rare)circumstances where you do not want a per-tab filter but a global one. Anyway, I've put it on my list.

What do others think on this?

Global filter list for all tabs please. However, the idea that each tab remembers the last filter used could be useful so that Ctl-Shift-J would toggle the last used filter for the selected tab.

Well... I sure think Gandolf's idea of a global/shared list but with pe-tab memory sounds cool ;)

Golbal vs per-tab, I think I'm in favor of a per-tab filter, simply because I sometimes use a VF on a tab, then another one on another tab, and when back on the first tab when I do Ctrl+Shift+J Im always confused that it doesnt use what i would consider being the last used filter, as in my mind I did a per-tab history so didn't expect to get the filter from tab2 used in tab1...

I'm glad you like the idea! (however, if you read the first post I think you'll see that this was the whole point of this thread... )

Oh, wait... maybe that's the point of the  ... OK, you got me! Sorry -- I'm a little slow this morning! :) ) OK... I think I need more sleep!

Don's point about there being a chance that people would only want the global list without the per-tab memory is a good one -- maybe a configuration option to turn it off.

Thanks for chiming in, guys! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this would be a useful addition to already fantastic product! (and it keeps getting better every day -- I learn new things, and Don adds new things! WOW!)

(can you tell that I *really* like it? now I know why you call it the XY fanatics club :) )

Was looking for something else and found this thread...it's been about 6 wks or so since last post...and since I just looked at VF's a bit closer now, this request makes more sense...as having ability to filter each tab using a somewhat different criteria would be quite helpful in certain situations. :)

However, I realize that may it not be easily done given how VF are stored...but now...as to global filters:

Is the key combo Alt+J and Alt+Shift+J currently in use? If not, I'd suggest that to trigger a global VF instead of the tab specific VF....or maybe some other similar key combo is available? I'm NOT that much of a shortcut user but was looking out for others!
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
