Application Font Consistency

Post by phatmankerr »

Sorry to bang on about this, but is there any way that all the dialogues and the info panel can use the font selected for the rest of XYplorer.

It's a bit of a mish mash at the moment - I use Tahoma 8pt for the tree and list view (and therfore menus and tabs) which looks great on a large LCD.

Unfortunately the Info Panel uses MS San Serif and many of the dialogues (e.g. List Management) use Verdana??

Find it so distracting that I rarely use the info panel (which is how pathetic I am).

It all looks a bit of a mess when you have the various elements open

Other than that XYplorer is my no.1 essential tool.

Cheers

Actually I expected this critique much earlier. I'm surprised how far I could go with the fonts...

Here are some points to consider:

- I cannot change the font of the menus and message boxes (globally managed by OS)
- Interface elements other than tree, list, catalog, and address bar, cannot be sized at will without somehow breaking the layout. And different fonts (even at the same point size) always differ in width. Tahoma would probably work at 8pt, Verdana not.
- Setting a different font for all (very many!) interface elements at start up will slow down start up.

BTW: Why Verdana in many dialogs? I personally like Verdana because it breathes more air. However in the Info Panel, where space is scarce, it would be too wide.

What now: I put it on my list.

EDIT: I did something...

Fonts

Thought you would have good reason :) , I understand the Menus and Message Boxes (my system is set to Tahoma so it picks these up anyway).

I also completely understand the use of Verdana (I use it as my standard Interweb font and also in my various Notes software) but I wouldn't choose it for a standard dialogue.

Will check the latest beta.

Half Way There

Excellent work (and double quick time too). Now just the thorny issue of the info panel.

I understand your reasoning (different fonts would bring inconsistency) but an option with a warning that certain fonts may not display properly would be handy and a similair restriction to 8pt would be fine.

I know everybody always asks for 'Optional' features  Maybe you could limit it to certain standard fonts that you know will fit within the confines.

I think I mentioned this before but MS Sans Serif whilst an excellent font on CRT Monitors is not so great on TFT's (and at 8pt you cannot apply Clear Type - I realise some people have an objection to Clear type but I really find it makes font's easier to read).

Any consideration would be appreciated.

Cheers

Yes definitely! :)

You're welcome, the interface looks indeed much better now! Love it.

Now that Verdana is gone from the Info panel... what about the dialogs? Is it only me that would like all dialogs to look consistent across the system (using the system UI font, whatever it is).

(Already making a nuisance of myself...)
