rich copy missing

Post by somethingfly »

Don't know what I'm doing wrong here, but know it must be me. I want to do a rich copy. I managed to do it once before. I did a search within XYplorer (v10.20), selected the files, right-click drag-and-drop into a folder and saw "Rich Copy" in the menu. Clicked it, and it worked like a charm. That was a trial run. Later I tried it on the files I wanted to copy. I did a search for all files on my computer; sorted them by extension (wanted to copy all the .doc's, to start with); selected all the .docs; right clicked on the files in the "Search results" pane on the right; dropped it in the directory "docs" in the directory structure on the left; saw the menu and it had "Copy Here," "Copy Here with Increment," "Copy Here with Current Date, etc.," but no "Rich Copy." What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

I have discovered the problem. It seems when you do a search for "My Computer," like I did, invariably you search also the directory you want to copy the files. And, apparently, you can't search within the directory you are going to copy (something that would be nice to include in the help section). I tried possible workarounds like excluding that directory from the search and adding/using a thumb drive after the search was completed--to no avail. It seems the only way this is going to work is to search drive by drive for the files and copy them to my thumb drive (or anywhere other than within a search location). Seriously, would have been nice to know this was a problem (perhaps it is a bug?) before I pulled my hair out. Nonetheless, this bald fool is thankful for your program.

Hi and welcome,

What you say is correct: Rich Copy does not appear in the drop context menu (when dragging from a search results listing) when the search was on MyComputer. This is because there is no common root (necessary to make a Rich Copy) in such a search.

got interested and made few experiments with strange endings.
Don, i tried variants of location determination according to help file:
C:,G: -doen't work
C:;G: -works
C:\|G:\ -works
yet, even if it worked location icon was yellow triangle, which makes feel uneasy -looks like you've(me) pointed something wrong. :|
"if you want to search for example drives C:, E:, and Z:, simply browse to MyComputer, select these drives in the list, and click Find (F3)." -worked only once. used it as= opened MyComputer, opened search info tab, typed desired file mask, chose D and G drives in List, pushed F3 =search still started from C. :?:

maybe i've done it wrong?..

1. The syntax variations you tested work (or don't work) as they should acc. to the Help file.
2. Improving the icon is a bit tricky, no time for it now. Read it as "Attention, this is not a normal/existing item name." instead of "Attention, you made something wrong." Maybe a question mark would be the better choice?
3. Works as expected. You have to tick "Selected Locations" on the Find Files tab.

seems i misread something, and i definitely missed a need to tick "Selected Locations" -sorry.
well, at least now i'll know to read it as "Attention, this is not a normal/existing item name.".
