I can't see the advantage of changing the font using the mouse wheel, in fact I find it a disadvantage that the font can be changed so easily. What is your reason for providing this feature? Is it related to the catalog?

disadvantage? how that?
No relation to the catalog. Zoom by Ctrl+wheel is a standard in web browsers (IE and Firefox at least).
I can't see how it could be a disadvantage either. However it is buggy - it seems to ignore many wheel-scroll events. Actually it's because of some minimum font size, and nothing seems to happen the first 4 or so scrolls upward when you're at the minimum - only after that does the font size start changing. Also when the font size starts changing, the font typeface also changes. Is this some setting of mine?

This happens when you use non-scalable fonts (raster / bitmap fonts) like MS Sans Serif. Select a TrueType, OpenType, or Type1 font via menu View/Font... and the wheeling will work smoothly.
