What no betas ?

Post by phatmankerr »

So after almost daily updates from Donald, there has not been a new beta for almost 10 days. I am jonesing for the next release ! Is Donald on holiday or is he working on something big :D

Hope it's the latter (although even Donald deserves a holiday - I suppose )

It has been pretty quiet around here lately.

Nah, he just took a month-long holiday a while back.

So, you think if I'm not here I must be on a holiday. No, honey. Life is full of other exciting things.

Currently I'm enjoying the very good state of the program. XY is in splendid condition, the bugs are indeed out on a holiday apparently, and sales are just fine! Never change a winning horse, right?

But, okay, you get a tiny little update tonite, just to keep you quiet and content :P

Was a bit concerned about your whereabouts as well.

...which translates to "As long as sales are fine, I won't change anything...?!?!?"
Didn't you always tell us about your top ten list - did it run empty since we didn't make enough requests?

...I guess this really tiny little update won't keep us quiet for long.

Getting restless too. But they say there's a silence before the storm. Hoping for the storm.

Wow, you really seem to need it, folks. Face it: you suffer from new-feature-addiction! Over the last two years you experienced that a file manager is something that always grows, changes, and adjusts to your wishes. Well, it can do that. But that's not the definition. It's core purpose is managing files.

XY is a tool for people who have to get work done. And for this type of work it's one of the best tools available on the planet. Yes, my todo list is long, but my done list is longer, and I can proudly say that there are more and more people that are very happy with what has been done! :D

Hey, the sun is shining, get out!

Features

Ok I admit it I am always looking for new features  , but I am really just waiting  to see what the new Favs functionality is like as I think it will make a fundamental change to how I use XY. Must be patient, must be patient !

I've just purchased a new desktop machine so the fact that Donald has slowed down the beta releases has given me a chance to set it all up. Thank you Donald, it was very good timing.

That's the one big feature I'm waiting for too. I wrote a plug-in for Windows Explorer a while back that sits below the file listing and gives you one-click access to user-definable favorite folders (it's actually pretty cool), but I don't use it anymore since I never fire up good ol' Windows Explorer anymore...XY's just so much better.

Meditations are going on... here's an intermediate stage: the status bar has to move below the info panel, else if the tree touches the bottom the status bar would be right of the tree which would look shockingly weird.

Here's some shots. I'm not utterly content. Too many lines and stuff. To less space for the info panel... is this the future?

Status bar at bottom (a radical shift for TV3/XY!):

Why don't you split the status bar in two?
1. for drive info at the bottom of tree view
2. for current list info at the bottom of list view

Depends on the resolution and view setups your aiming for.
At 1600 x 1200 the info panel would fit easily in width under the listview. (and even with 1200 x 960 it would)

I'm going to be unable to access this forum for next few days due to a trip, but I'd like to say...some of us are fixed at 1024x768 res due to laptop so I'd design for that as typical...on my web site, (which tends to skew to an older user), the stats I get on visitors say that 1024x768 is most common res, followed by 800x600...those far outnumber any other res....most public PC's that I use tend to use one of those also...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Layout

Have no real objections to either layout. This is probably heresey but I very rarely use the Info Panel anyway - so I always have the full tree available.

I'm not sure which way I like better...make it an option. Actually, if I were forced to pick one, I'd rather have the one where the tree extends all the way down. But I also run my monitor at 1280x1024.

I would imagine that XYplorer's main audience is the power-user type people, and I'd think they don't run their computers at 800x600...1024x768 is probably the lowest, I would think.

Oh, in fact I will! These 2 shots are not either-or-alternatives but 2 views of the same possible future. The focus at the moment is on the statusbar: if I make an optionally-touch-bottom-tree the statusbar will always touch the bottom, even if the tree does not. At least that's my suggestion -- but I'm not sure whether I like it myself: the status bar below the info panel looks strange to me.
