how to migrate settings? [solved]

Post by eil »

it seemed to me i looked closely, still found no topic about my particular theme(strange!).
i watch the development, checking betas, but i don't know how to easily migrate my settings from XY i use daily to each new beta? i presume just coping some files may not work, as with more and more implementations there new tweaks appear and old thing start work bit other way. yet i guess installing over is not a method either.

mm.. no, that's not what i meant. this part of faq says about just coping XY i use in one PC to another PC, and i'm asking about coping settings i set in my daily 9.90.0000 to, for example, last beta .0705, so i can use what i already set before and try what's new.

Isn't it the same? If you don't want to change your main installation data when trying the latest beta, but still want to use those data, you have to copy them somewhere and use the copy.

But I'm not the one to ask (I don't have this problem). Everybody else here should have a solution for that problem. Come one everybody...

- Use your old "9.90.0000"-folder (or an copy of them)
- close XYplorer
- copy the new files from the beta zip download to that "old" folder
- start the new XYplorer.exe
- close the new XYplorer.exe with saving to update the ini
- start the new XYplorer.exe
- done

i didn't think that coping over could just update(add new features) to old ini. i'll try that.
still got a little question: as i understood new XY.exe would automatically add new things to old .ini but how about some "structure" differences? in particular catalog= as i know it's saved other way with lately betas - how is this solved through coping?

There is smart update code in XY. :) Each catalog file has its own version info embedded. XY recognizes when the catalog is in old format and needs special care.

The is true for all configuration files. AFAIK the upgrading should work pretty seamless even from version v1.00! The code is still all there and active in 9.90.
