exe icons in win7 x64

Post by Muroph »

i started testing win7 x64 this week (dual booting with XP), and xyplorer seems to be working pretty well.
except that i'm only seeing generic icons for ALL exe files.
i'm running xy with admin privileges, and UAC is completely disabled (that thing is really, really annoying  ).
xy settings are identical to the ones i use in XP, and the icons show normally in that OS.

any ideas?

Ensure that this is OFF: Configuration | Advanced | Use generic icons for super-fast browsing

yup, it's off.
i tried changing the other icon related settings and rebuilding the icon cache, but nothing worked.
also, i noticed that xy does display the embedded icons in the properties tab, but the exe icon is generic (see the screenshot).

already rebooted a few times, mostly because of apps and drivers being installed.
right now i'm installing SP1, then i'm going to reboot again.

WFM on Windows 7 x64 SP1.

Just in case you missed either of two Windows settings which may have a bearing:
- Start Menu search > Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows > Visual Effects > Custom > Show thumbnails instead of icons, should be disabled;
- Start Menu search > Folder Options > View > Always show icons, never thumbnails, should be disabled.
(It may be that the two routes above lead to the same setting, but better safe than sorry...)

Also, you are running with 32-bit color depth?

Edited.

thanks for the tips.
but the icons still didn't show up. :(

yep, 32-bit.

messing around a bit i found that the path to the icon associated to exe files in my system is "%1".
is that correct?

BTW, the exe icons do show up in explorer itself.

PS: actually many things related to icons don't work well in win7.
icons in icl (icon library) files are not recognized, icons of some file types can't be easily changed (apparently only via a registry hack), and i've had trouble using stardock's iconpackager.

OT, but I stopped trying to control large parts of Windows sometime after making the mistake of installing the Plus-pack for Windows 95 (and I'm sure there's a nasty DOS memory lurking somewhere also...)

I think the combination of Explorer correctly displaying the icons as well as the %1-parameter set as the icon *source*, points to Windows doing what it's intended to, for a change, although I am discounting the Firefox oddity here (also 32-bit?). I'm afraid that customizing icons isn't something I have experience with for the "reason" given above.

I hate to ask an experienced XYplorer user this, but given that Explorer works on your system and WE, Firefox and XY on mine, you did try with a clean profile already? Also, in case it's Windows profile-specific, have you tried creating a second Windows user account and see whether it works in that before customizing it in any way? Finally, I vaguely recall IrfanView causing some sort of icon problem long ago; could software like Stardock's IconPackager and IrfanView if you have that installed, be a factor?

the thing is that in XP i do have a good degree of control.
but i can't say the same for win7.
honestly, if i wasn't a heavy gamer who wants dx11 i would never use win7...

yeah, i also thought about the 32-bit problem.
that, many compatibility problems between 32 and 64-bit apps, plus a few other things, makes x64 look like a bad idea to me.
at least for now.

well, it was a fresh profile.
i had only installed win7, plus the mobo and display drivers.
i had not installed iconpackager yet.

anyway, i'm reinstalling win7 x64 right now (from within xp), and if that doesn't work i'll try the x86 version.
i'll post again after that.

the icons came back after reinstalling win7 x64.
still no idea why they had disappeared, tho.
i migrated my user account, changed the same settings and installed the same apps as last time.
then i aplied my icons using icon packager.
and the exe icons are still working... :?

Also there is a column headers bug (not cleared bg drawing)

I want to migrate from Tablacus Explorer to XYPlorer but this two bugs is very annoying...

Hi,

wow, this is an old Windows bug. I have not seen it for years. Is your Win7 up-to-date?

I found out that headers bug present only in custom windows themes, with default aero | simplified style everything is ok.
Despite the message for the window is correct (there is WM_ERASEBKGND).
Will try to do some changes in style builder, maybe it will help... or maybe not.
Exe icons still blank. I do not know how to fix it.
