Coming from Xplorer2

Post by Randall »

Hi
Thought I would give this program a try. Long time xplorer2 user, frustrated with dropped settings and the pecullarity of saving settings and getting things to work. It is good, but I'm just tired of fighting it

So far very impressed with xyplore. Like the layout already and the labeling ... One thing I don't see is folder groups - however, I see user buttons and these look like they could work for shortcuts to folders. If someone could help me with a basic script to a folder for example on c drive/desktop

also looking for comments from those who have used both programs, xplorer and XYplorer. If I'm going to invest a lot of time trying to learn this, I don't want it to be wasted.

Also, can you tag video files ? I know you cant do that in xp with explorer, but just upgraded to windows 7 and wondering if it is possible to add comments and tag video files ?

Its been a long day, so just looking for some easy help for a change
thanks very much
Randall

Hi and welcome,

not sure what you mean by "folder groups" or "shortcuts to folders". What are you trying to accomplish? Maybe you mean Favorites?

Tagging: You can tag any file in XY. Especially in the current BETA version (and soon in v9.90) there is the new feature "Tags" (not in the Help file yet). Just try the BETA here from the forum, show the "Tags" column in the list and see the related commands in the Favorites menu. There are also 4 toolbar buttons related to Tags... and you can right-click the Tags column for more options. Configuration of this is done in Configuration | Tags.

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

I used x2 (free vers) before finding XY and I still use it on those quite rare occasions when XY doesn't do what I need so otherwise I'm VERY happy to have switched to XY...and the speed/responsiveness of author Don can't be matched as shown above! (Given his timezone, this is morning there). Plus, we have a great group of people here in the forum as well.

Yes, x2 has a few features that XY doesn't and vice-versa but in my case, the XY features are those that I use more often so I'm quite satisfied.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

I think what you want is represented by Tab Groups (Workspaces) on the roadmap. In other words, it should be coming to XYplorer in 2011.

thanks for all the responses...

what I'm trying to do is simply ad an icon link to the taskbar.
When it is clicked, it will go to a specific folder location in one of the panes...
just looked at favourites - added one - don't see how I can add that to the taskbar...???

obviously got to play with this program a lot more, it seems quite powerful

thanks

You mean toolbar, right?
It's easy (although I admit I should make it even more easy... working on it...):
1. menu Tools / Customize Toolbar...
2. at the bottom of the Available Buttons list you find 32 User Buttons. Take any of them and add it to the Current Buttons. Click OK.
3. now you see the new button in the toolbar. Right-click it and select Edit...
4. fill in the fields as follows

Code: Select all

Name: Go to C:\Windows
Icon: C:\Windows
On click: goto "C:\Windows"
then click OK

Now the button brings you to C:\Windows.

It should be easy to work on from this example.

If you are interested in having the button show a menu with a couple of locations to choose from, there is a very easy way for that too. Just let me know...

Randall, if you've not done so, I'd also suggest you look at the Catalog feature which I find more useful than Favorites...I can't recall if x2 has that type of thing as it's been months since I last used it and also as I'm using free x2 vers, some opts aren't available to me.

Right, the Catalog is made for this kind of thing, and you can simply drag new folders to a catalog category to add them.

BTW, right-click the Tree to get a popup menu of the Favorites.

hey

great, have been playing around...catalog is very good, and got the folders going..

have done some reading and searching, but I would like to ask labels to the taskbar icons. I read a post that they were removed but configurable...don't see this in configuration or config file..

1] how do i add labels to the icons ?
2] I'm missing some context menu entries...ie folder guard - no option to add unlock
3] moving files - is there a Q ? this process seems to use the windows engine..

really appreciate all the input...having fun figuring this program out...looks very good so far

By right-clicking the custom toolbar icon and selecting Edit, you get the Edit User Button dialog. Anything entered into the Name field is shown in the button's tooltip. AFAIK it's not possible to show any toolbar buttons as text rather than icons.

I'm guessing you're running the 64-bit version of Windows 7, in which case this FAQ applies. Just in case, you should make sure Configuration > Extended > Default items only in shell context menu is unchecked.

Simple question, complicated answer :). XYplorer currently uses the Windows Shell file functions like Windows Explorer. Those operations can already be queued and/or run in parallel however; please see Configuration > File Operations. Next year, XYcopy 2.0 is expected which will replace the shell file functions with custom kernel-based ones, enabling a "native" UI as well as additional functionality such as file verification and copying of ACL's.

hey...slowly getting there..

still, I cant see the "custom toolbar icon"
I did right click the taskbar, and searched through all the icons -
what am I missing here ?

also noticed no option for "large icons" in views...wondering why, I don't like
thumbnails because of the time it takes to generate previews for stuff like movies
etc..

again, appreciate the time..

Hi,
To get the custom buttons:
1) Go to menu "Tools" and click on "Customize toolbar".
2) On your left, there are lot of icons, go all the way down and you will start to see "User button #1" #2 #3.
3) Choose any one and click add button in the middle.
4) You will see your item added on the right, drag and move it up or down to your liking.
5) Right below the list on the right, check "Large icons".
6) Click OK and you will see user button on the toolbar now plus the icons are larger

Regarding thumbnails, Go to Tools menu click "Configuration", on the left section click on "Thumbnails" and uncheck "Show thumbnails for non-picture files". Click OK.
You will not get thumbs for only image files.
