OT - Nice tool to monitor Thread Changes...

Post by SkyFrontier »

Came across Right Web Monitor and loving the possibilities. It notifies on thread and file changes, even (badly) downloading files automatically.
Toke a time to guess a parameter that could be used to monitor XY forums, but now it seems to work ok. So I'm free to work on another machine without having to pay attention to hot threads - it will notify me via soundspeakers when a change is made.
-does anyone know of a FREE alternative to this?
-if anyone shows interest but has some difficulty on setting up parameters and test the thing, contact me via this thread or PM and I'm ready to help. In hopes of turning everyone's Life easier, just like XY turns mine each and every day since we met each other again after all those years... :D

It's a bit low-tech and not quite what you're describing, but bookmarking http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/search.php ... ive_topics works very well for me. Keep one tab or even window open with that address (possibly automating the refresh) and Bob's your uncle.

(Hat tip to j_c_hallgren for the tip!)

The thing is: sound/tray/window notifications on thread changes! :P
But thanks, nas8e9, for the hint - Hallgren also told me to do that when I came to this forum earlier this year!

One quick question: it may be suggestion, but the forum seems to load a little bit slower. Could be several things including my ISP, but is the software you use very aggressive by itself or so set?

I do not intend to view forum using it. I am just setting it up to check the forum for changes, play a sound alert THEN I come to this computer and see what's going on. Mainly, I'm enjoying the sound notifications feature.
Feel free to ask anything else.

Regarding configurations, one can set it to do the checking at any intervals he wants it to. So forums may be set for a 10, 20 minutes check and sites that are less prone to update their content/software I am setting up to do a check each 2 or 3 days. That should be enough - no even bother to open their web pages (oh! FORGETTING to do so, in some cases, as I was doing for the last weeks due to increasing amount of work to deal with...).

Website-Watcher is the program I've been using for this, it looks like Right Web Monitor has similar features.

The author of WSW is another of those great developers who provide fast direct support to any problems you may have :).

Thanks for the heads-up, Jibz.
I'll look after it and report later with impressions.
So far, Right Web has impressed me.
BUT:
-it's heavy, it gives a impression that runs slowly, it IS slow to check a web site;
-could have better notification options: ok, it notifies also via SMS, mail and others (not tested), but in no way I see how I can set it to NOT be that discreet! I mean... if I am at the desktop, tray/window notifications are nearly un-noticeable if I set no sound;
-documentation has few examples on how to get tasks up and running - one have to scratch head and do several attempts until he guesses a proper working set of parameters... .
