About a year ago I went looking for an Explorer replacement - mainly because I was doing loads of housekeeping and REALLY REALLY wanted 2 panes !!! I tried loads of programs but found I was only ever using Tracker. Clean - fast - lean and functional - great !
Yesterday I finally bought the program - I was intending to donate anyway but what convinced ME to register was being able to configure and save the toolbar ONLY in the paid version. An expanded AND user configurable toolbar has been top of my wishlist since I found the program.
As Donald noted - this functionality opens up unlimited possibilities [ or perhaps as we say in English " a can of worms":-D ]
Anyway - here's an idea.
Like many posters it seems I am not the only one who dislikes trying to learn keyboard shortcuts - mouse or right click for me ! The more clicks I need for something the more frustrated I get and the longer things take!
Donald commented somewhere how cluttered right click had become.
So could a solution be to move some of the less common functions from menus / right click onto dedicated "special function" toolbars: thus decluttering right click AND offering extra functionality with less clicks therefore more speed.
You could add a buttons for each "function toolbar" to the MAIN toolbar to toggle the display of the actual "function" toolbar - this way it's easy to quickly display it only when you need it.
For example - my current project is trawling through a few thousand files getting the ID3 tags in order. I am doing all my copying and moving etc in XYplorer and then do all the renames etc in more specialist ID3/rename programs. The frustration in XY is the time it takes to right click "info to clipboard" click > copy filename for every file or folder so I can paste into my rename program etc.
How aboaut a "clipboard toolbar" with buttons to copy FOLDER NAME, PATH, FILENAME, [etc etc] to the clipboard ?
I note some users want 2 pane functionality [ which if I have understood correctly WON'T ever happen :-D]
Could a Copy/Move toolbar be a solution: For example.
The toolbar has [ at least] 4 buttons.
Set Target [ sets the the currently selected path as the target]
Move
Copy
Close Toolbar
I select for example E:\Backup in the tree and click "set as target"
Now I find files I want to move or copy .....
Then I select them and click on move / copy as appropriate and off they go to the target drive / folder. Repeat with other files as neccessary. Then click Close Toolbar
No more multi-level right clicks and dragging up the tree to find other drives etc. The target stays set until changed.
Other specialised toolbars could be for rename, ID3 Tagfuntions, filterering the displayed file types.
I hope this makes sense if not shout. :-D
Any thoughts ???????
Cheers
Graham

i did search for an explorer replacement myself.. i did used xplorer2 for a while, but i like xy better. its more graphical.. the folder branch color thing is very useful, also the thumbnail thing.. and you have the option to use it for free.
what keeps me from buying it? a couple of things.. the two pane function for example. i cant understand why mr donald wont even consider it, when it could only add more power to his app, even if it could only be an optional tab..but after all, its his app right?
what i miss? .. address bar..
i do have to go back to x2 for some folder operations, cause as far as i know xy has not folder compare, or file renaming features.. anyway
personally i dont like toolbars, i always hit the wrong button, so i prefer (and its not hard for me ) to learn shortcuts, besides, the apps often lets users to customize them, so we assign those we already know
the set target thing i find it interesting. toolbar or right click i think it could be an improvement, besides !! it can be used to perform folder comparising operations!! among other things maybe..
lets wait what mr D says about
see ya
