Possible changes for Find File behavior

Post by avsfan »

Hi,

I just got bitten by this again, and wanted to see if anyone else has had any issues with it.

The issue is with the visual filter in the Search Results tab. What happened is that the last time I was looking for a file I needed, I used the Find Files feature and was presented with many results. No problem -- I used the Visual Filter and was easily able to find what I wanted. So far, excellent! A couple of days later, I needed to find a different file. I went back to my Find Files, changed the filespec, and saw... nothing. The status bar informed me "Found 0 items of xxxx/xxxx" -- and I KNEW the file was there. I clicked "Reset Filters" to make sure something else wasn't preventing the file from being found, but NOPE -- same result.

This was really disturbing, as I knew the file was in the selected subtree -- I could even find it in a different window, but the Search Results were still empty. I finally realized that I had the VF still turned on, and when I turned it off everything behaved as expected.

I *now* realize that the status bar text color changes from black to blue when the VF is on, but I'd like to have a better indicator that the results are filtered (maybe "Found 0 items of xxxx/xxxx (filtered)" or something like that). Or some other indication (I just noticed that the space right above "Find Now" could be used for a VF indicator, and would be more likely to be noticed before the search is performed...)

Just a thought -- If I were a newbie playing around with the VF and then did a find (forgetting that VF was ON), I'd likely be very confused...

Any other "fools" think this might be useful? (you know, Don has a "two fools" rule...)

thanks!

It also might be useful to have the visual filter turned off when the "Reset Filters" is clicked (or perhaps a tweak to provide this behavior)...

Man, I thought of another similar thing that drives me nuts sometimes and that is Hide Folders in List. Its the same thing - you forget that its on and wonder what the hell is going on. The things get worse if this happens in the middle of a struggle with some other software. Trying to monitor several appz with all their sometimes really annoying and weird bugs, in the course of my routine workflow, the lack of proper notification that there are hidden folders, apart from the pressed button above, can really piss me off. And this happens way too often to go unnoticed. I've had your issue with the visual filters too. So I guess this is a part of the bigger question about the proper notification for such kind of filters. Obviously pressed buttons above don't get the job done. I think of some dim or transparent sign or letter(s) on the blank space of the List... I don't know...

Thanks for considering this, Don.

One other thought -- when I've got lots of tabs, there's not a lot of space in the tab header to tell when a VF is turned on for that tab, so if I navigate to a new location and don't realize the VF is on, I may not see what I expect to see.

The reason I mention this is that in my request I was specifically mentioning the Search Results tab, but I think this additional indication of VF being active would be beneficial regardless of which tab I'm using...

I'm happy with doing this for VF (and also the new Type filter in search results) but I'm unsure about HIDDEN. I know that many users always hide HIDDEN files, and it would be a bit stupid to put a heavy marking to a state that's normal to them.
