Admin wish: Test the Network Enumeration

Post by admin »

I'm rewriting the network browsing from scratch because various users reported various little problems. Obviously these things (if they work, how they work, how fast they work) are depending on OS and other environment parameters in a number of mysterious ways. So I see only one good way: test it!

Please download the following micro-app, press the buttons as indicated, and tell me what happens and how fast, and what's your OS. Thanks!

Allright.. I think I'm getting some weird results but...

Method 1
Time is around 28 when I'm lucky, 6 500 otherwise; but I cannot tell you why or when it's gonna be fast or slow....
Clicked 10 times, got the slow one time only.

Shares: always 1.2, but clicking on one computer list all the shares of all computers!

Method 2
Pretty much the same as Method 1, also clicked 10 times and got the slow results 2 times.

Same results for shares.

Method 3
This one's a weirdo. Once again sometimes fast and sometimes slow, but I get almost always all the computers listed twice.
Clicked 10 times, 8 times results were fast but double, the two last ones were slow. First of them was allright, the last one though had double the computers again.

For the shares, it took 1.2 too when it listed the computers rights, but around 4.1 when they were doubled (and then, all the shares appeared twice two.)

Method 4
A blessing ;) Time around 10 all the time, never slow, always right, yeahh!! :D
But, damn there's a but. When I clicked on my computer in the list, it listed only my shares in 1.1
When I clicked on another computer, it took 5.6 to get an empty list :?

I gotta say though, I tried to be as "accurate" as possible, but it doesn't obey a precise rule or anything... seems more randon than anything else
Maybe you should be an automatic thing. We click, it does every tests n times & write the results in a file that we'll send you or something...

Let me know what you want next.
Edit: forgot to say, I'm running XP Pro SP2

Thanks! I expected some weird stuff, but not that weird! :?

- I never get slow results.
- (3) also doubles results for me (XP Prof; but I know at least one Win98 user, where it works okay!).
- (4) is clearly the fastest.

That (1-3) list all shares is a bug  ... fixing it now...

I'll also add some batch routine for speed testing; only it cannot check whether the results are good...

Ok, I fixed the bugs (no time for the batch, though).

Jacky, other 2000/XP users: please try if method (4) works ok for servers and shares.

Win98, Me users: please try which of methods (1) - (3) works ok for servers and shares.

Thanks! :D

Yep, figured as well that (1-3) list all shares, but among them are the ones from a W2003 server, which aren't listed with (4) if I select that server.

Running W2K SP4, times were:

1. around 27'000
2. between 25'000 and 40'000
3. between 30'000 and 51'000
4. less than 10

and then all the server-wise share listing ops were below 15
Ralph :)

Yes, it does :D My computer still as fast, around 20ms the 1st time, 8 after that for other.

BTW I clicked again on the 3 first buttons, and i noticed that for the 1st method (maybe others too didn't try that much ) sometimes it takes 9sec to get an empty list :?
But I'm on XP, and using the XP Method everything works great & fast :D

Wowee! Those numbers speak a clear language!

I hope the new version (just uploaded) will work alright for method (4).

Ok, checked (4) again, all times between 6 and 14 msecs, looks pretty fast.

Good good, thanks.

So it looks like Win98 users are not so interested. Maybe there aren't that many anymore, at least not among power users and professionals. I'll leave them with the old code then... :P
