How to make listview scroll at end of tab

Post by polymorphic »

Hello everyone
I need some  enlightenment.
I always use listview. From Windows Explorer I'm used to the following behaviour: If selecting a file in a column at the right side of the pane which is not fully displayed, the list will scroll so that the item comes fully into view. In XYplorer this doesn't seem to work.
Is there some setting to change that?

XYplorer uses a custom List, which unfortunately doesn't seem to work as you describe; it seems useful. I can't find a setting to activate this myself.

Hi and Welcome,
This feature existed before version 8.80.0314 (19-feb-2010) and yogi came along to say this:
yogi wrote: I have my window in List view. If I highlight a file in the 2nd column it will automatically scroll it to the first column. This is extremely annoying and I can't find any option to disable this.
So Don changed it:

Code: Select all

* List: In "List" view clicking an item in a cropped column does not
scroll that column into view anymore.
Thinking loud and asking Yogi: it seems OK that something becomes visible when you highlight it. If you don't want to see it then why highlight it? If you want to see the name just hover your mouse?

Does this mean it used to work until two months ago and has been "unfeatured"?
So that means back to v8.8 or WE; I guess.
It's so essential

Hi and a belated welcome to the XY forums from me also!

Maybe it depends on which vers of WE (and thus Win vers) but on mine, selecting a partially visible file doesn't move the display at all and that was part of reason why XY was changed to match.

And as serendipity said, you can always just hover to see the full name...personally, I like the new way cause I didn't like the display moving without me making the choice to scroll it and while I rarely use List View, when I do, I can almost always still get the desired file even though I only see part of it so scrolling is not often needed.

Why do you need to have it scroll? Isn't that distracting to have the list keep bouncing back and forth? I found it such.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

But if you use the keyboard to select in list view it does scroll, so it's not consistent between different modes of file selection.

Well, neither is the base WE, it seems...I just double checked my WE and on keyboard select, it also scrolls so at least they both match on this mode.

Apologies for not properly searching.

Windows Explorer in Windows 7 does do that.

I'm not sure why the OP wants it other than consistency with WE, but personally I tend to go from beginning to end in folders to prune selected files throughout the folder. By the time I select a file in the next column, completely visible or not, I want to go through that next column and columns beyond. Basically, when I start selecting files in the next column, that column is "up" for perusal and having the list scroll that column fully into view does seem more fluid and logical.

Also; click on a name in the right most column to select it, and then click on the same name. The display scrolls left. It doesn't matter if the right most column is partially or fully displayed, or how long the delay is between clicks. You can even switch to another application and back again to XY between clicks!

Windows Explorer in Windows 7 does do that.
I now checked my XP sys and it also does not scroll on mouse select.

But consistency with which WE? Since it seems that WE behavior may have changed...

Ok, your description of workflow is understandable but for me, seeing majority of filename is enough and since on hover, I can see rest, plus I can always use scroll bar or keyboard to shift it, so having it move automatically for me affects my usability...diff user = diff ideas.

I suspect this change came with Vista, but I don't currently have a VM to check that.

Fair point. Based on the first point, the OP probably has Vista or Windows 7.

I think that this is indeed something that won't work the same for different users. Do you think this is important enough to ask Don for a setting?

Im on windows 7 and it definitely scrolls in WE... But what WE does or does not is not the point.
When I was on XP I had the scrolling listview in XY!
Why is it important?
I think this is all about preferences. Everyone has their own way browsing files.
Example 1: I have a good deal of audio samples on my machine. It very much eases my workflow to be able to browse through a folder and preview them. You see, it's of no use to be able to see their name when hovering the icon. They have names that definitely don't identify them like "DD_140_Rythm Loop_0027_A.wav" or "drt130TTE19007addon1.wav". It's extremely useful to preview and just click through the folder until I find what I'm looking for.
Example 2: Now and again I like to customize the looks of my System. Very good to see the embedded icon resources on the infotab. Even better if I can click my way through a folder full of exes, dlls..
Example 3: A lot of shifting and sorting going on on my system. Huge amount of folders. Very useful to see the size and containined files and folders on the infotab. Even better when able to click through to the end.
In any case, if I click an item I want to work with it.

FWIW, I'd like the original behaviour to be (optionally!) available as well.

OK, if the Win7 Explorer auto-scrolls here I will re-add the feature by factory default (but make it optional via a tweak).
