select multiple folders in tree pane

Post by daniel_m »

i'd like to be able to select folders in the tree pane the same way we can select them in the tab pain (click on "empty space" and drag a selection rectangle or use keyboard).
there might even be an option to set xyplorer's behaviour in the tab pane for that (e.g. "do not update files displayed in current tab and only select marked folders", "display content of first selected folder in currend tab", "display content of all selected folders in currend tab", "display contents of first/all selected folders in new tab as soon as mouse button was released and process of selecting is finished by user").

Hi and welcome!

Being able to select multiple folders in the Tree pane is rather unorthodox behaviour -- I am personally unaware of any FM allowing a user to do so. Would you be kind enough to describe advantages of such functionality compared to selecting folders in the List pane(s)?

Thanks and regards :)

yes, but xyplorer is rather unorthodox itself compared to other file managers (that's why i love it  ).

regarding advantages:

1) in case of the most simple implementation with xyplorer not displaying the content of folders selected in the tree pane, it just spares me a "seek and click" of the root folder, followed by a "seek and mark" of the subfolders in the tab pane. to organize folders you have to review their content one by one and if you do this by clicking on them in the tree pane, it would feel natural (to me) to also select them in the tree pane without moving the mouse somewhere else.

2) displaying the contents of selected folders in one tab would be more complicated to implement i suppose. but being able to have all files of selected folders displayed in one tab would be a very powerful feature in my opinion (like a quick and easy search *.*).

The roadmap lists Virtual Folders. I can't find the post I think I saw, but I seem to remember that it will allow listing the contents of more than one folder.

hm, i think you could call displaying content of multiple folders "instant and temporary virtual folder", but i still think it is a separate and additional feature. "selecting folders in the tree pane" is something completely different.

I can't find very specific information about what the planned virtual folders will be like. Don did refer to this function when asked about implementing "flat" view of a folder's content including subfolders; that's why I thought it might pertain to your question.
