Disabling Extensions

Post by SkyFrontier »

When Tools\Customize List\Hide Extensions is set, file.txt.lnk files are mistakenly shown as file.txt. Is there a way to get it to show nothing as extension, or preferably file.lnk in case of links, at least? Having both (none/.lnk) as available options would be even better.

That's not a mistake! That's part of the name! Anything prior to the last "." is not an extension, remember?

And why would anyone ever hide extensions? I have never understood that, as it opens you up to files that aren't what they appear to be.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I know that. Think on the home users, which know ANYTHING on computing. Problem comes when they saw something that they were not seeing when using WE.

WE:
file.txt.lnk is shown as "file",
file.txt is shown equally as "file".

XY:
file.txt.lnk is shown as "file.txt",
file.txt is shown as "file".

They usually simply don't know that one is a shortcut, and one is the file itself.
OF COURSE it'd better if they could keep extensions KNOWING that each extension will accomplish a different function despite having the same name. But they are not power users, they barely know how to turn the thing on and we should respect that.

I don't understand why people drink and drive. But that doesn't keep governments away from preventing car accidents any way they can.

But the main question is: why not having an option to show file.txt.lnk, file.txt AND file, to fit each XY users needs, if that probably is not that hard to do?

I have a setup that ignores all of the above - I CAN understand the environment I'm in. I don't have any problem with X, Y or Z situations. I'm trying to give a focus on the non-XY people and think that's a way to help Don in spreading its audience. But why not just sit and watch the paint drying?

Ok, so then why didn't you present it originally as such? :P You made it appear as it was YOU who was having the problem, as compared to what a less techy user might perceive which is a totally separate issue....and besides that, those users are NOT very likely to be candidates for XY even as much as we would like them to be...they don't even know there is any option for a better way!

I just went to a test folder that had a few files of various types, created a new shortcut to a TXT file (and thus creating a xyz.txt.lnk as one) and then viewed the folder in both XY and WE in both modes (hide ext + view ext) and they showed exactly the same...so where is the problem? I'm not seeing it.
