Zip files

Post by squarerootofminusone »

Any chance of xy having in native mode the two most basic Zip file operations: the ability to see inside and extract from?

I believe you can get these two functions if you edit your configuration file, find "OfficePreviewCustomExtensions" and change that line to include .zip.

For example, the line in my file is:

Code: Select all

OfficePreviewCustomExtensions=.zip
Then you can see inside using the preview pane, and should be able to just drag files directly from the preview pane to where you want them to go... Definitely a nice feature!

I hope this helps!

:? Well, I tried it and it doesn't work for me...hummm...

My default zip handler is WinZip and I use IE6 (due to W2K limit), and what I get when I try to look at a zip file in preview tab is the standard "File Download - Open/Save/Cancel" type pop-up...

I left that msg there, came here to make this post, and now it tried to "download" it from my own system and hung up, so I canceled it, and now it says for any zip files that "Office File is currently open by another app"...

So there must be more to this story than what is presented here.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

I think I even did that. But it's not an official feature since there seem to be too many dependencies on other settings, systems, IE versions, etc.

It works on my system but the listing is always in large icons view which drives me nuts. How can I fix it to be in details view forever?

Oh, i don't know then. Mine was always details so didn't bother much.
Some thoughts:
1. Since XY uses IE to preview, maybe IE has some special setting for details?
2. Maybe it works after restart?
2. Maybe there is a registry key to this?

i would also like to know this, but, honestly, i gave up a long time ago.
i was able to make WE remember the settings, but in xy i always see the icons view.

the closest i got was with a shell extension that could open both zip and rar files in the preview panel, but it caused some problems in my system and i had to remove it.
