Continue to open X items at once? prompt

Post by otis_lewd »

I have set up a user defined command to zip selected files all at once. But if I select more than about 10 files, XY gives me a message box saying "Continue to open 16 items at once?" How do I get rid of this message box so that it doesn't delay my creating the .zip file? Thank you.

I get the same thing when I select a bunch of MP3s and drop them onto the winamp.exe I have in the catalog and I don't know how to avoid this.

There's an upper limit to items passed via command line. About 16 items will probably work on any system. Higher numbers might lead to errors. Hence the message.

Errors? You mean there might be errors in the resulting .zip file? The message does not say anything about errors - it just asks if you want to continue. I didn't know there might be errors when I told it to continue. If that is the case, then I will use something else that can handle lots of files at a time. I don't know how other programs handle it, but I suspect they write to a "hidden" file list, then do the zipping operation from that file list, thus circumventing the command line.

If the command line is too long no Zip file will be generated. Didn't you ever hit that limit (after telling it to continue)? Maybe the limit is much higher under your OS ... which is it, Vista?

XP, SP3. I don't remember all the details as I stopped doing .zip files with XY and am using other means (PowerDesk and FreeCommander, both of which work better with regard to .zip files). I believe there were times when I wondered why something wasn't created.

Why don't you use the shell context menu? I do all my (un)zipping with XY ever since using WinZip's context menu items (shell extensions). Works like a charm.

In essence that is what I do with the PowerDesk shell context menu. I hate WinZip - I don't think it is a very good program. But PowerDesk works just fine. Was hoping to gain a one hotkey solution with XY rather than using the several clicks of alternatives.

It must not be WinZip. Most archivers implement shell extensions.
