WinZip 9 right-click drag-n-drop dialog?

Post by sklain »

Currently, right-button dragging a file in Tracker to an existing WinZip archive calls up a context menu with the choices "copy to here", "move to here", etc. This is helpful, however, the same action in Windows Explorer brings up a more interesting customized WinZip context menu that offers numerous additional choices -- of special interest to me, the ability to copy or move while simultaneously encrypting. Could you implement this with Tracker as well?

By the way, one more small wish to help Tracker along the path to perfection: As you know, when dragging in Windows Explorer the target folder or file is marked when the cursor hovers over it just before releasing the mouse button and actually dropping. This helpful visual aid ensures that the action goes to the right folder or file. Would it be difficult to do this in Tracker as well?

Uh, Tracker cannot drop onto ZIPs, just onto folders. Explain, please.

This is built in since day one! Are you telling me you do not see the hovered folders being marked (as if selected)???

You're right and you're wrong: Left-click dragging produces the "no-parking" sign but now give right-click dragging a spin and drag a file to a ZIP archive. Welcome to the hidden wonders of Tracker!

Yes and no: when dragging to a folder, the target folder is indeed marked; but when right-click dragging to a ZIP file (see above) the ZIP files isn't marked.

This wonder is 100% hidden to me, and since I know the source code of this app pretty well, I'm rather surprised of your report.
One idea only: Are you using Explorer's Zip-folders feature?

a bit ott-topic but while there I noticed one thing TV3 doesn't allow, while Explorer does, is drag&drop onto a RAR/ZIP file

(btw right-dragging on archive doesn't work for me, TV3 (get the usual "copy here/move here/..." context menu) nor Explorer. Might be a WinZIP only thing though....)

That's what I'm saying all the time! It's not implemented so it cannot be buggy

Please explain: What is Explorer's Zip-folders feature and how can I determine if I'm using it?

Zips are treated as folders: they appear as nodes in the tree and the contents are listed in the file list.

Since I don't ever use Explorer I don't know how to turn it on or off.

From the Windows Registry Guide:

Code: Select all

Disable Compressed Folders (Windows Me/XP)
Category: Home > Tips and Tricks
Windows Me and XP include a built-in feature to manage compressed ZIP files and folders. This tweak allows you to disable it and install a third-party application.

To disable the compressed folder feature click on Start -> Run and enter the following command:

regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

To enable ZIP folder support run this command:

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.
It's so long ago that I removed the option it took me a while to find out how to do it!!

I'm not sure about this either, but I kind of remember, that during installation of Winzip you could set this option as well, but couldn't find a setting in Winzip's options now.

I evidently don't have the Zip-folders feature activated, as Zip files all appear and act as normal files in Windows Explorer, not as folders.

To summarize (go to https://fotoalbum.web.de/gast/sklain/Screenshot to see the screenshots mentioned below):

Right-click dragging with Tracker calls up the limited context menu seen in screenshot "Tracker-Winzip rightclick drag.jpg", which doesn't provide for either encrypting or moving.

Right-click dragging with Windows Explorer calls up the extensive context menu seen in screenshot "WinExp-Winzip rightclick drag1.jpg". The screenshots "WinExp-Winzip rightclick drag2.jpg" and "WinExp-Winzip rightclick drag3.jpg" show the additional choices offered in the two drop-down fields "Action" and "Compression".

Would it be a big deal to tweak Tracker to call up the more extensive WinZip context menu like Windows Explorer does? Or alternatively (for my purposes), could the existing Tracker context menu be expanded to include the additional choices "Encrypt and Copy" and "Encrypt and Move"?

I understand what you want but TrackerV3 does not support dropping onto ZIPs. I just can't do it.

Just to be sure, I meant usual drag&drop, not the right thingy 8)

@sklain: when, in Explorer, you right-drag a file onto a ZIP do you instantly get the WinZIP window? Cause, and i'm guessing you've probably tried it already, but if, in TV3, you click "Shell context menu..." you should get the usual explorer menu, whch might have some extra options (ie. for me, when right dragging ZIP/RAR files I have the WinRAR menus there)

Yep, right-dragging a file to a zip archive in Windows Explorer instantly gives me the extensive WinZip context menu. Clicking on "Shell context menu..." in Tracker is no help: that just gives me a very abbreviated context menu with 3 choices: Copy, Create Shortcut, or Abort.

In the end, I've decided that Tracker's inability to call up the WinZip right-drag context menu is a non-issue. After all, right-dragging to a ZIP archive does add the file to it, which is what most people want (strange, though, that the target ZIP archive isn't marked -- oh, well), and the extensive WinZip "Extraction" options are all available in Tracker.

I have an admission to make: my only purpose in wanting to drag and encrypting (small) files to ZIP archives was for security purposes. Not being able to do that with Tracker motivated me to find a more logical method, which I believe I've found now with Cryptainer: much easier to encrypt on the fly than WinZip and definitely more secure (encrypted files are hidden, whereas they're visible with all other zipped files in WinZip (with an added asterisk to show to the world that they're encrypted).
