Hi,
for me, the most important function of XYplorer (in fact, the only reason I installed it) is the preview for moving quickly through my files and sorting them into their appropriate folders. But there's a problem: Whenever I want to move a PDF, I get an error because the file is in use (by the preview panel apparently). The preview panel then greys out and I can move the file in a second try, but it's still slowing me down a lot.
Can anything be done about this? Am I doing something wrong? I'd just like to preview and directly move PDFs just like txt or other filetypes.
Cheers,
bliss

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!bliss wrote:Can anything be done about this? Am I doing something wrong? I'd just like to preview and directly move PDFs just like txt or other filetypes.
You're not really doing anything wrong...and there isn't much (AFAIK) that XY can do about it either as PDF preview isn't handled natively by XY but rather by Adobe or Foxit or similar and they all have a tendency to "lock" the file when it's previewed, so it's not actually XY that has the file in-use...and coding a built-in PDF handler isn't something that Don wishes to do, as I recall...BTW, I have had similar issue with Excel XLS files.
I've noticed that Adobe Reader 8 tends to let go of files a bit easier than ver 7 did but still doesn't release it when I'd like to...it also grabs focus so that keystrokes go to PDF and that's another issue.
One thing that I do is switch to another tab on Info Panel, such as "Find Files" which seems to help, at least with focus issue.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I still use 7.0. Most of the time it locks the file, about 10% of the time it doesn't... Seems to depend on some property of the file as well.
It's not less of a problem with Foxit or some other viewer? If not, I'll have to deal with it, I guess

Re: Can't preview and move PDF
I was reluctant to move from Adobe v7 as well, but ran into some files that required it so upgraded...since doing so, I've found that AcroRd32.exe doesn't stay loaded in RAM for hours/days after I'm done with it as v7 did..can't tell you how many times I had to just kill it via Task Mgr...now v8 does take about 30 sec or so to flush out but at least it does...on this older 512MB W2K laptop, freeing up RAM is important!bliss wrote:I still use 7.0. I used Foxit for quite a while and it help with some XY issues but had some minor ones of its own (toolbar didn't fit right), so try both yourself and see which is better...I'm not readily aware of other choices, but there could be some that I've not tried. It's not less of a problem with Foxit or some other viewer?
