Random crashes
Random crashes
Xyplorer has never crashed on me, or if it did ever it has been very very stable until last couple betas. I am getting random disappearances, just suddenly Xyp is gone. I do not get and crash related message at all. I am not sure about how to tackle this issue . I am on xp 64bit. I have generally 10-14 tabs open. I am using 90.0253 at the moment. It has been steadily crashing on me last couple days, 3 4 times a day. I know this is a vague report but really I do not know much more than this.

Re: Random crashes
Which version/day did this start?
(Download the last official version .0250 to see whether this is still okay).

Same, it(th release) crashed on me again. It seems to happen anytime I launch an application using windows right click ie(open with xnview) for example.

Re: Random crashes
Did you install a new shell extension? It's usually the culprit.kartal wrote:Same, it(th release) crashed on me again. It seems to happen anytime I launch an application using windows right click ie(open with xnview) for example.

Re: Random crashes
Well I have been using what I have been using last 1 year and never had this issue. This just started happening last week or so.

Re: Random crashes
I also use very same rigth click explorer shell with other explorer replacements as well but I do not get this kind of crash-disappearance problem really. For example I use Q-dir and Freecommander. They do not show this ill effect

Re: Random crashes
I would fix it if I could.kartal wrote:I also use very same rigth click explorer shell with other explorer replacements as well but I do not get this kind of crash-disappearance problem really. For example I use Q-dir and Freecommander. They do not show this ill effect
So it is true that something changed in your right-click menu recently? If you can name me the culprit I can do some tests here.

Re: Random crashes
Sorry I know it is really vague reporting, it is hard for developers to figure out when complaints like this does not have an error.log attached. But all I can say is that I have been using Filemenutools right click addon for 2 years. I never really had any issues with it, or with Xyp+fileMenutools until last couple weeks.
Here is the url for it. Please give it a try if you have time. It is a nice addition also

Re: Random crashes
I did not change any code here (context menu) since long (many months). There's nothing I can do.kartal wrote:Sorry I know it is really vague reporting, it is hard for developers to figure out when complaints like this does not have an error.log attached. Re: Random crashes
Just to make sure the culprit isn't a context menu handler (trust Don, these convenient harmless looking shortcuts in our context menus can turn out as awkward beasts; especially leftovers from long forgotten deinstalled softwares that you don't even see in your menus can haunt you for years).
In my current case (on w2k "SP5"): i installed IZArc's longingly awaited brandnew 4.01BETA right after XY .250 and set it mostly to a configuration i had with the prior versions. Except for one option that immediately caught my interest: "Display compress menu items for archives" in context submenu. I checked it, right-clicked on some file in xy's list and xyplorer instantaneously crashed; started anew it let me enter the context menu. After some hovering across izarc's submenu, withdrawal of cursor and clicking some whitespace in xy it froze for about a minute with the hourglass showing, then xy's window disappeared and after some heavy harddisk action finally released the process too.
As soon as i unchecked the suspected IZArc option the spook was gone.
Surprisingly enough i can have this option enabled on .254 without any flaws since afternoon.
Get Nir Sofer's ShExView (nirsoft.net) (it's portable, no installation) go to options menu, check "Highlight Non-Microsoft extensions" and "Highlight suspicious extensions", then sort for the Extension type column and right after sort for the Microsoft column (click on columns' headers) and you will have pink highlighted all your third-party shell extension objects on top of your list. Looking for context menu in the extension type column you can easily spot any leftovers. And you can temporarily disable one by one to narrow down to the culprit. Keep in mind: it can be just one special setting in an otherwise flawlessly working interaction.

Re: Random crashes
Linkaday thanks for the answer. I have already use the tools you have mentioned. At this point I have no intention of giving up Filemenutools because it has been my major tool even before Xyplorer. And as I stated before, I do not get these crashes with anything else. I understand Don`s position and his intuition regarding this issue. But I do not have anything else to do about it to resolve it either. So either I give up FMT or XYp, obviously I cannot use it like this with multiple crashes a day. The thing is that I have reported similar issue before about "shup"extension which is a tool to upload to various sites. Again no other tools crashed when "shup" was invoked from within, except Xyp. From what I understand Xyp is not very happy when there is a right click extension. So I personally do not think that it is just "them" causing it.
One other solution would be letting me to modify the current Xyp`s own right click menu, this way I can run various programs with argument passing. I am not sure if it is possible or not, then I would not need FMT.

When I look at these two statements by you (both from yesterday), I don't think the Filemenutools can be the (only) source of the problem. The problem acc. to you started only some days ago so that's where I start my investigation: what did change some days ago, (1) in XYplorer? (2) in your system?kartal wrote:At this point I have no intention of giving up Filemenutools because it has been my major tool even before Xyplorer.

Re: Random crashes
Don, I want to state this one more time, Xyplorer has been a very very stable tool even in beta phases. You have done a solid job in view. SO in this crash issue I really do not hold anyone responsible, things happen, bugs occur, conflits are very common. But in the end if it is possible I would like to get to the bottom of it.
The current system I am on is a fresh xp64 installation that I installed 3-4 weeks ago. I have installed FMT and Xyplorer as usual. Generally these apps work fine except when I invoke inside Xyp and that does not even happen all the time.
Prior to new system installation Xyplorer was crashing on Shup which was %100 constant result. So it was obvious that there was a conflict. Now I do not have shup installed at all. So that is out of the picture.
I have FMT and Xnview shell (thumbnail)viewer installed at the moment as far as shell tools go. It might be the Xnview as well because I tend to think that it happens more with images. So it is really hard to figure out. If you have a debug version, I can definetely try it.

Re: Random crashes
You cant hack XY's right click menu but "Portable Openwith Menu" is very handy in such cases. I myself use it quite extensively and its very handy.kartal wrote: One other solution would be letting me to modify the current Xyp`s own right click menu, this way I can run various programs with argument passing. What i like most is you can configure it for extension type and you get only context related menu (not a huge context menu).
