Error writing to ini file -permission denied in Vista

Post by t_mcconnell »

I'm not sure if this is the right area for this post but it is a question.
I recently upgraded my computer to a new build with Vista 64. For years I have used separate partitions for the OS, Data files, & Program files. After installing the XYplorer trial version (with plans to unlock later within 30 days) I get permission denied errors when XYplorer attempts writing to the ini file as it shuts down. I had a similar permission denied problem when installing another program and finally installed to the default Program Files (x86) directory. Has anyone had a similar situation and how was it resolved? I'm going to try activating but I do not think that will help.
Thanks for the replies & BTW I think XYplorer is the best file manager I have ever used.

Hi and welcome to the XY forums!

Yes, this is the perfect place to post this type of issue!

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience on/with Vista, so the best I can offer is a link to some prior threads that I've just found that may relate to your situation and/or Vista 64:

http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2576
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1922
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2676

It would appear that you may be on the right track with the Pgm Files x86 idea based on what I've read in these threads...sorry I couldn't be of more assistance but we do have some V64 users here who may be able to give a better answer....but I like to make sure that all new forum members get at least a prompt greeting and reply. :)

:D So do we! That's why some of us devote so much time to try and help out Don and thus XY.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Hello!

Vista is a bit special about rights to write. However, XYplorer offers options to specify any "Application Data Path", so it's easy for you to choose one where Vista has no complaints. One possibility is using startup.ini (please look up in Help). Another one is to use command line parameters (/ini=...) to set that Application Data Path (you would then start XYplorer using a shortcut where those command line parameters are defined).

 Sorry! I forgot about that! Thus see http://88.191.26.34/XYwiki/index.php/Ap ... _Data_Path also.

I have resolved this - I'm not sure exactly how though  . Before the first post I had tried to change folder permissions but was denied the ability by Vista, even logged on as an Administrator. I experimented with disabling the User Account Controls and re-enabling it, eventually I was able to change folder access permissions. This maybe relevant - the other program I mentioned installing was Adobe Acrobat, and I believe (I'm just guessing) it had the entire directory locked at root level including XYplorer program folders. Thanks to everyone for all the tips. Tom
