show catalog, in info bar?
is it possible to show catalog, in the info bar as a tab) ?, some programs nowadays have dragable snapable windows (like acdsee for example you can drag the window where you want and it docks into that space (or makes a tab) depending on the area dragged), could this be put into XY?

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
I see that between time I first read this post and now, you clarified a bit what you meant, since there is no "info bar" in XY, at least by that name...but given what the catalog does, it would not be compatible with a tab as least as XY knows tabs.noir wrote:is it possible to show catalog, in the info bar as a tab) ?,
The concept of draggable/resizable areas has been discussed before but it's not that viable, plus the existing view choices appear to be more than sufficient for users...but that's just my opinion.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
info bar = info panel (where find , raw view..etc is), as for tab i mean like next to the "find files"(or any tab) tab it would have a tab that says catalog
i like the catalog function but i hate things obstructing the tree view, maybe a collapsible catalog (like the info panel does) would be another idea

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
As I wrote, the function/purpose of the catalog is totally incompatible with this concept, IMO.noir wrote:info bar = info panel (where find , raw view..etc is), as for tab i mean like next to the "find files"(or any tab) tab it would have a tab that says catalog
So the various ways to show/hide the catalog/nav panel (toolbar/shortcuts/split/etc) aren't sufficient for you?i like the catalog function but i hate things obstructing the tree view, maybe a collapsible catalog (like the info panel does) would be another idea

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
all im saying is this program needs improvement, every idea is nayed or shot down, right now im debating what progam to buy, XYplorer or xplorer2 , both cost the same price but xplorer2 has alot of features i need native 64bit for one , recyclebin , scrap folder (for putting files temporary), unicode support, dual pane, check for dupes, good find, (also have a free version with most features the pro version has)
http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm take a look at the feature list, i think XYplorer needs to start puting some features in that users request, if they want to sell it.
now don't get me wrong XY has alot of features i like too, but im starting to question the programmers ability, in his roadmap it says its not fully unicode yet, have problems putting the recycle bin in the tree (but iv seen 10+ other ones do it), undo , redo, im not sure how long this program has been around but maybe these features should have been put in already., recyclebin is {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
im still testing both programs so i havent made my mind up yet.

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
First, let me say that I am not the developer (and not financially or otherwise connected to Don) but just a fan who has been on this forum for about 3 yrs so I've seen a lot of users come & go here and my prior/following remarks are strictly my opinion but may likely reflect those of other forum regulars and/or Don himself, ok? And while you may well be a undecided buyer, your attitude towards XY and us/me is thus making this more of a conflict than it should be. Sorry. And this reply may be a bit lengthy but I think it's appropriate.
That having been said..
That having been said..
We're not saying it doesn't but as users of this for quite a while, we have differing ideas on what is critical to us most likely.noir wrote:all im saying is this program needs improvement,
Maybe because of the ideas or "bull in china shop" approach being used? New forum members who come on too strong are not ideal in any situation.noir wrote: every idea is nayed or shot down
Ok...and do I hope you choose XY...but be aware that I and some others here use other FM's on occasion also...I use x2 lite for example on those rare cases when I just have to manually match two folders...noir wrote:, right now im debating what progam to buy, XYplorer or xplorer2 , both cost the same price but xplorer2 has alot of features i need
I'm not a 64bit user but we have some who are and that hasn't seemed to be a major problem for them. Why exactly is that a "must have"?noir wrote: native 64bit for one
Already addressed..it's available now, just not the exact same way you're used to.noir wrote:, recyclebin ,
Our variant will be "drop stacks" which is coming.noir wrote: scrap folder (for putting files temporary),
Current support seems sufficient for our international users based on other threads here.noir wrote:unicode support,
Next on "roadmap" and likely in process.noir wrote: dual pane,
On "roadmap" also.noir wrote: check for dupes,
XY's current find is, IMHO, just as good or better than x2.noir wrote: good find,
These are two competing products and you've picked some items that x2 has, but XY has some features that x2 just doesn't have and may never have either, so look at that aspect as well, ok? Also, there is no "they" in XY! That's why I bolded it...It's just one developer, Don and he's doing a better job than a team in many cases. The speed and level of support here is pretty much unmatched by any competing product, IMHO. I've seen a minor bug be fixed in less than 15 min from time of report to beta vers. That's almost faster than anti-virus app's get updated. Now the typical turnaround time for most bugs is one day or less, which is still VERY impressive. Just try and match that with a competing product!noir wrote: (also have a free version with most features the pro version has)

Good that XY has features you like but why do you question Don's ability?noir wrote:now don't get me wrong XY has alot of features i like too, but im starting to question the programmers ability
Huh? That item is marked with a "+" indicating it's completed.noir wrote:, in his roadmap it says its not fully unicode yet
Repeating myself again, it's not a coding problem AFAIK, just a different implementation (raw view) which is needed in many cases as well.noir wrote:, have problems putting the recycle bin in the tree (but iv seen 10+ other ones do it),
On the "roadmap"noir wrote: undo , redo,
I'm not 100% sure either but it's at least about 6 yrs. Update: From XY web site - "XYplorer was called TrackerV3 from 2000-2005!" so 8 yrs at least.noir wrote: im not sure how long this program has been around
Features have been added based on user request and Don's desires and while I'll agree some of these would be nice, it still hasn't stopped me from making XY the FM that I use 99%+ of the time.noir wrote:but maybe these features should have been put in already.
That seems likely to be not true for all the OS's that XY runs on, but I'm not 100% sure.noir wrote:, recyclebin is {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Great! And as I wrote above, I really do hope you choose XY but if you don't, we'll (at least I will) understand but be aware that its been my experience that there is no one FM that has everything, not even the biggest player in the field, so having more than one is often needed.noir wrote:im still testing both programs so I havent made my mind up yet.

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
Noir, this is probably NOT what you might like to hear - I suggest you buy the product that meets most of your needs now and that seems it may not be XY! There is just a word to the wise - I guarantee that in 6 months the competitive products will be very similar to today but XY will not and will have progressed to include new features which probably are not even on the road map!
Since you are questioning the programmers (Don) ability then I would definitely suggest you buy another product as that is just plain silly - products like XY don't come from dodgy programmers and since in XY's case the programming team is one person it is not designed by a marketing team either.
I also agree 100% with jc's kind remarks.

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
well the other program is only one developer too (by looking at the forum), graham i never said admin was a dodgy programmer (i said ability), i work in open source alot and one person might get stuck on something but two seconds later another programmer can come up with a solution, its not that the first programmer was bad at programming, just the idea / or solution was different between people.
and like i said im stuck in a loop with these programs (sure 64bit isnt needed but its nice to have), i think XY gui is nicer, i like XY's info panel, and XY's find better, XY has about the same speed as the other program. Really i like XY better, but a few things really annoy me about it like the icon (xplorer2 has a neat icon), fact there is no option to enable recycle bin in the tree is annoying, also in xplorer2 it hides unnecessary folders in vista while keeping the system file view on.
j_c_hallgren you said things on the roadmap with + mean its complete? because Unicode is very important to me.
(he should put a legand on the roadmap like "+ = feature added" and " - = feature underway ")

Now, as I've stated here, and in the other older thread (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=251), yes, while I'll agree that it's not the conventional "user" view, BUT that means one can do some things that just can not be done if it were, ok?
First, it was ONLY via XY, that I found out why I was short on space on a thumb drive as I could see the raw file in the actual RB on that drive, and thus resolve the issue....maybe there was some other pgm that would have done this also, but I didn't have one.
Second, in XY, using the raw view in combination with the "user" view available via Tools menu, I can actually still preview and thus locate a JPG by contents (pix of that house, whatever) and not by name. I just tried it in x2 lite...it shows me a JPG as hex dump via preview when I'm in the Recycle Bin...so XY gives me extra required capability...and that has proved handy so that I didn't have to restore a bunch of files just to locate the "oops" one and then re-delete the others.
Now, I will admit that XY uses WE to show the "user" view, but just how often do you actually look at or use files in the RB? Most ppl only go there on rare occasion and tend to keep it empty....and besides, by having it available via the Tools menu, that means I can still get there even if I have Tree hidden! One more advantage for this method of handling it.
Maybe it's cause as someone who's been here a while, it's so obvious to me that "+" means done since those items are now listed on XY site as new features in the various recent releases?j_c_hallgren you said things on the roadmap with + mean its complete? because Unicode is very important to me.
(he should put a legand on the roadmap like "+ = feature added" and " - = feature underway ")
I really don't want to take this tone, but I'm getting a bit frustrated, especially with this RB hangup thing...sorry!

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
its not a hangup :p, i'm just a really old fashioned user and kinda got used to the way things been, the RB clisd is the same for every os since 98 (maybe even 95) , look try for your self go to windows explorer type this in the address bar
::{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
and viola it takes you to the rb , admin would just need to add that link in the tree menu put the icon , and maybe hardcode the links to empty or whatever. i think the problem is :: XY confuses that with a script maybe thats what breaks the functionality?
even type that number into google you can get official microsoft pages stating its the recyclebin
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/136517
that thread is 3 pages long you posted read through a few but just saw admin saying its a OS feature (and thats not true)

In that case, why are you looking at using something besides Win Expl?noir wrote:its not a hangup :p, i'm just a really old fashioned user and kinda got used to the way things been
Any alternative has slightly different ways of doing things...you'll just need to adapt at some point...Vista isn't anything like W98, so should the same logic apply?
...Right...and then..that thus breaks the functionality that I (and others) have come to rely upon? Not an acceptable resolution, IMHO.and viola it takes you to the rb , admin would just need to add that link in the tree menu put the icon , and maybe hardcode the links to empty or whatever. i think the problem is :: XY confuses that with a script maybe thats what breaks the functionality?

Re: show catalog, in info bar?
well if you know programing you can add a if statement like
if (scripting= ::{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E})
{
// terminate the path add recyclebin to tree
slash[0] = 0;
// copy the path into 'dir'
strncpy(dir, pathcopy, 1024....etc
}
else
{
run normal script code...
as for your comment why i dont use WE anymore is simple , vista ruined it and thats why i went looking for a replacement, for example in vista explorer you can't see the size of all file in the dir without highlighting them, second when you click on folders vista magicly changes the view depending on what files are in the dir, scans files mostly movies , picture, audio ..etc , can slow you system down, likes to lock files so you cant delete them...just to name a few things.

yea :\ im trying to figure out how the others did it, maybe they somehow captured the actual explorer window into their program making it look like it was intragrated
