Hi XYplorer Users,
Something happened a few months ago and XY started to close out suddenly and more often, for no reason that I can figure out. No error message it just freezes for a moment and then disappears.
A while back it suddenly failed to preview MS Office files, so Admin suggested that I deselect those file types for previewing, and that solved the Office files issue. XY seemed to be in good shape after that, but then the close-outs started and I have no idea what causes it. I'm using XY in my normal manner and it disappears. Have to reopen it and go back to where I was in the interface, although the toolbar seems to re-establish itself properly.
Is there a dump file that I could send to Admin or somebody to look over, maybe find a clue in it?
My OS is Windows 11 with the latest updates, and I have not installed any software just before this started to occur, that I can remember anyway.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Kevin
XY Closes Out Suddenly
Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Hello Admin,
Yes, the same Lifetime License Enterprise that I have always used, and it's on one installation only.
I verified it when I had the MS Office preview issue that you helped me with a month or so ago.
A couple of weeks ago I uninstalled and re-installed XY but that didn't solve it, but I'm guessing that something else in my computer is causing the issue, some Windows update or another app.
Thanks, Kevin

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Are you using the shell context menu before XY closes? If yes, this might put an end to the problem:
- Go to Tools | Configuration | General | Menus, Mouse, Safety.
- In the Context Menus section, check the "Hide shell extensions from shell context menu" checkbox.
- Click OK.
Does it help?

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Hi Admin,
I did as you suggested and let me use it for awhile to see how it goes, did some typical operations with the context menu and no XY crash but will evaluate it a bit longer.
Yes I'm sure that I was doing something with the context menus before a crash, I'm using those controls in normal operation with XY.
Anyway, looking at those menus items, none are essential and only one is handy, the Avast file scan for downloaded files . . . but maybe that one is the culprit. If this solves it then I'll try the ShellExView tool to figure out the culprit, although that software hasn't been updated since 2019 -- still works OK I hope.
Thank you for your prompt support on a holiday, it's much appreciated and I'll update this post soon with feedback on the results.
Regards, Kevin

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Hi Admin,
Hey it still has not shut down and I'm using XY a lot right now, lots of context menu action too. So I'm thinking that you solved it for me and one day I'll chase down the culprit app, but not urgent now, have too much work to complete soon.
Thanks very much and you can close out this issue whenever you want to, if you don't hear from me by tomorrow morning then it's 100% solved!
Kind Regards, Kevin

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Hi Admin,
Well, the good times ended and XY closes out again. I'm using it a lot doing re-name operations and drag-drop to a web app, but it does not close while I'm doing those operations.
It closes suddenly and discreetly while sitting idle, I notice only because the app behind it suddenly pops in to view with a different background color. When it closes, I'm working in the browser that's open in another monitor.
The other apps that are open are simply MS Edge browser and PDF-XChange Editor. Avast internet security is always running in the background but that was running long before this problem arose.
For now I'm using Windows Explorer but that thing is primitive, I have to put on my power reading glasses just to read the tiny text -- it doesn't zoom easily like XY!
Thanks for your assistance!

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Hm, that's hard to debug, of course. But it may well be a thing that will either just disappear and show some kind of error message in the upcoming 64-bit version.

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Hi Admin,
Yes an odd one for sure. I'm checking to see if it is something related to PDF-XChange Editor, so that is closed with XY open, I don't need the PDF viewing for awhile. Let me see how it goes and will get back to you.
There was a strange situation with that app, I'll explain in detail if it appears that one indeed is the culprit -- it was strange behavior in the update function of PDF-XChange that has recently (and mysteriously) disappeared and it now updates as normal . . . . disappeared after the change to XY context menu that you suggested.
Thanks, Kevin

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
Hi Admin,
Well, it looks like the culprit is in fact my PDF editor, XY closes out only when that is open, whether I am using either of them actively or not. Seems strange that a PDF software would cause a problem with a file manager.
Soooo, my question now is when does the 64-bit version of XY become available??? I hope not too far off, even a beta version would probably be better and maybe we can figure out the core problem.
Thanks and Regards, Kevin

Re: XY Closes Out Suddenly
A smart developer never commits to a release date. Especially for something like this. In the meantime viewtopic.php?t=28273. The latest version is on the last page, but I strongly suggest reading the first post and skimming through the rest so you can see what issues have turned up.
