Flexible tabs not shrinking with shorter folder names

I have flexible tabs and only folder name captions on...I prefer minimum 225 (for larger captions - that is, I don't want tabs that long to be cut off).
But when a caption is small ie "1" "2" "Documents", I get a huge tab with empty space with above!
Is there a tweak available to let it shrink to the tab name when they're shorter, while when they're longer, applying that minimum tab width?

It seems you mean maximum, not minimum?

Have you tried to adjust the min and max in Tools > Configuration > Tabs as shown below?
