Memory Useage

Post by John Bee »

Well, here I was about to add to the bug/wish list concerning the high use of memory, (one time I had XY up, it was using over 45mb of ram!!) when today I checked process explorer and almost fell out of my chair.

I had just loaded up XY and I minimized it, then checked process explorer and it showed XY with peak useage at 13.7mb (I've never seen it this low) but when minimized XY only takes 1.1mb of ram!!!

Edit: I forgot to add that when I brought XY back up from minimized, I was expecting it to go back to 13mb, but nope, I sit here with XY up and only taking 1.9mb of ram.

I don't know when this happened but, way to go Don :D

I know: v7.20.0026 - 2008-06-29 18:38 ... see history. And since v7.30.0002 - 2008-07-01 12:40 this former "tweak" is hardwired.

Ah, that's why I missed it, cause I missed it! :) I never downloaded 0026.

Too busy converting to Linux. Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have said that... Ok, forget I said that.

Hmmm... I'm not seeing the reduction....

I've got 2 instances of XY open, one with 6 tabs and the other with 8 tabs. The one with 6 tabs is taking up 95MB and the one with 8 tabs is taking 97MB. Minimizing does nothing to reduce the memory used (nor does restoring).

Both instances use custom ini files -- would that have anything to do with it?

This happens with 7.30.0012, (which should have the fix, I believe).

Is there anything I can do to see this reduction in memory?

After all that talk of memory usage I went to check it on my system.

With 13 tabs up XY uses:
- Initially after startup 12 MB
- Minimized 1.5 MB
- Restored 2.9 MB

I'm on XP Prof. SP3

On my XYplorer with 4 tabs and one search tab, memory is:

After startup- 15mb
Minimized- 1.2 mb
Restored- 2.5

XP pro SP3

OK, an update...

Short version: Things appear to be fine -- Using process explorer, I still showed approx. 100MB per instance for XY (virtual size column). After some investigation, I realized that the column for process explorer should be "Working Set Size" instead to see the same value reported by Task Manager and by XY itself.

Long version:

Looking at the XY configuration->startup tab, I noticed that the memory usage listed on that tab was 24MB (though startup time was more than 22 seconds). When I minimized the window, things got much better (as others have noticed).

So something was strange with Process Explorer, since the regular task manager showed the 24MB usage initially as well). So I looked around a bit, and the "Working Sets" column in Process Explorer shows the same value as the memory size shown in task manager (if anyone actually cares!).

One curious thing, though -- when I restore the windows, the memory used jumps from about 1.xMB (minimized) to about 4.x MB (restored). However, as soon as I move the mouse into the XY window (I've got the "focus follows mouse" tweak turned on so I don't have to click to give XY the focus), memory jumps up to about 8MB (primarily when over the list area). Not a major problem, I just thought it was interesting to see such a jump when not doing anything (though it's actually probably related to hovering over an item, which *does* actually do something).

Perhaps further discussions on this should be in a different thread in a different category since we're off the "reviews" point now...

Anyway, I guess the point is that Process Explorer's "Virtual Size" column isn't the right one to watch for actual memory usage! (though most people may have already known that!)

Actually the two memory columns you want to watch are:

Working Set - what is being used right now
Peak Working Set - largest amount used so far.

I just checked on mine...

When minimized, it's about 1.2MB..
Upon restore, it goes to 3.xMB and then up to around 5MB+-.,,
When I move mouse to XY window, it then jumps up about 7MB or so..

But it's still WAY less than it used to! It was averaging around 15-20MB, as I recall.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

I just tested this under Vista.

It does not reduce memory at all.

I have XP running at 23mb ram, peak 27mb. Minimizing does nothing to reduce memory useage.

Since this is related to task manager, I have a question.

In the process tab of Task Manager there is only one XYplorer.exe, but there are two XYplorer entries in application tab: One says XYplorer and another has the title bar contents of XYplorer.

I see this both at work and home PCs. Both are WinXP Pro (SP2 and SP3).

Not a problem in itself, but has anybody seen this? or why two entries?

No, it's also same here on W2K...when XY is minimized, the title bar one goes away as expected, but otherwise, there are two...I normally look at "Processes" tab so hadn't paid attention to this before.

Well, one entry goes away if you minimize to tray not otherwise. Anyway, this is such a tiny thing I dont even care as memory usage is normal. But still, the info is misleading and needs fixing.
