Unable to delete within a tree

I am using version 7.20.0000 and here's an interesting one.

Imagine a folder tree like this:
A --> B --> C, so basically folder B is in folder A and folder C is in folder B.

The right hand pane displays the contents of folder C. Now try right-clicking on folder B and selecting Delete. I did just that and Windows came back at me screaming that I need permission to perform this action. However, right-clicking on C and selecting Delete works and folder is in the bin.

Is that how it's supposed to not allow you to delete B in such situation? Is it a bug? Or am I missing something?

I just tried it in Win Expl and got the same access error msg so XY is thus working no better/worse than WE...

Not sure why that is so, but given that it matches WE, I'm ok with it as is.

There is a workaround. I use a program called Unlocker that deals with files that you try to delete and get a message along the lines of "unable to delete. this file is being used by another program".

So to be able to delete B in aforementioned circumstances I right-clicked on B, selected Unlocker from context menu and it turns out that there are 5 process handles locked on folder C, which is what's preventing the deletion. However, as soon as I unlocked those handles I was able to delete B while viewing C.

Furthermore, considering that in B there is nothing else other than C, then I'm struggling to understand why it's possible to delete C while viewing C, but not possible to delete B while viewing C...

no problems here.

did i do it right?

create some folders like this:
a/b/c
display c on the list.
delete b from the tree.

unlocker shows lots of processes (all xy) using the folder, but delete works.

v7.20.00

EDIT: WE also works.

"C" is selected in tree and contents in list, then right-click on "B" in tree, get "delete?" msg, say yes, and then get "Access err" msg...(I only did it in WE to make sure it failed same way)

Works fine here too.
Like described, i had A>B>C and c had a text file in it and was displayed in list.
Tried deleting B from tree and worked fine.
v7.20.0004 on Windows XP Pro SP3

i did try with files in 'c', and even previewing one of them.

i tried many different combinations of files, folders, panels and settings, but couldn't reproduce.
how i did it:

in the tree

new folder
--ds
----dshut

'dshut' is on the list with a bunch of files inside.
i right-click 'ds', delete and confirm.

is that right?

Yes, that's what I did...I also had one file in the "ds" folder (in your naming)...and it fails in XY also, as I just checked.

I'm on 7.20.01 and W2K, so that may make a difference.

I know that this behaviour is mimicked by Windows Explorer, but I don't think it's the right way to go and Xyplorer should go one step further (because it does already) and make sure that this works.

Don, can you please clarify if this is inherent Windows behaviour and if anything can be done about fixing this because as far as I can see it's a bug and a flaw in logic to boot

Same here..

XY's got 5 or so locking handles on .\A\B but it allows me to delete B from the tree without any complaint.

What I find weird though is how after deleting B it jumps down a folder in the tree instead of going up to A.

This has been discussed elsewhere (can't find it now). There is no official standard behavior here AFAIK, and I checked various other products and my impression was that most of them do it the way XY does since 10 years: on delete keep selection on the same row if possible. In Tree, in List, everywhere.

Did you do it right? Remember, you need to have at least one file in C, whether you have any files in B is irrelevant.

Okay, now I see it. It's related to Autorefresh. Try to disable Autorefresh and it will work. Right?

Correct, it works now. However, is there any way to make it work with Auto-refresh turned on? For someone like me (and I'm sure I'm not alone) it's an important feature.
