Options which would make me switch from Dopus to XYplorer

Post by Sander Bouwhuis »

Hi there, I have been using Directory Opus for ages now (ever since the Amiga time). But, the prices are so high, I've been looking around for alternatives.

I'm trying out XYplorer, and (so far) found a couple of things which I would really like to see (in order of importance):

1.
An undo function for copy, move and rename actions. Without this, I'm not even considering switching to XYplorer.

2.
A lot more columns to choose from. E.g., pic width, pic height, MD5 checksum, song length, ...)
Especially important (to me anyway) is a column with the amount of files in the folder(s). It is possible now to get the folder sizes using <SHIFT+F5>, but not the amount of files.

3.
Inline renaming. In Dopus you can, while inline renaming a file/folder, press the cursor keys to go to the previous/next file name. This is tremendously useful for quickly renaming a bunch of files.

4.
A better copy dialog. In dopus you get a lot of info during the copying (speed, total files, ...)

5.
Dual view. Having 2 listers and a tree makes for very fast and efficient file management. Now I have to move up and down the tree constantly. This is very error prone and very slow to boot... it reminds me of the archaic Windows Explorer.

You've probably found out that when in rename mode if you hit the "DOWN" arrow the filename will be deselected and the cursor will be immediately to the left of the file's extension. If you hit the "UP" arrow the filename will be deselected and the cursor will be at the beginning of the file's name. Both of those are nice features...I especially like the down arrow feature. What you're looking for DOES exist in XYplorer via TAB and SHIFT+TAB when in rename mode.

Aha, I didn't know this. Can the shortcut keys be changed?

- Undo : it's not implemented yet, but is on the list!

- More columns : I know it's been mentioned before, but I'm not sure if it's going to happen... I seem to remember that for efficienty issue (speed/memory) it hadn't received much love...
I do agree about the number of files/subfolders though. Maybe not as a column for me, but available when making reports, and on demand somehow, that'd be nice indeed.

- ATM XY does not handle file operation itself, but relies on shell (and its limitations & slowness). This is on the list as well...

- No DP yet, but you could try if you can't improve your workflow maybe using some of XY's unique features, such as the Catalog, UDC and/or Scripting...

- You can't change the keys used on Rename Mode, no.

Re: DP - read through this thread: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 006953c768

and see what you think of Mesh's proposal. No decision has been made yet (that I know of!), so there's still time to provide your input.

Yes, that's something that I'd also find useful, and am surprised that it's not been mentioned before (AFAIK)...I can get this via some other products, I believe, but having it in XY would be good.

The usage of keys was the subject of a quite lengthy and involved discussion when they were last changed, and they provide (IMO) all the functions that one might need.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Actually, for reports, it has ;)

Oh yeah, I agree, and I'm totally pleased with the way things are ATM.

 Well...I looked at that thread and noticed that it was dated almost all in Sept 2005! And when did I start using XY? Jan 2006, ok? Thus it was mostly 'before my time' and thats why I didn't know of it.
