Previewing doc files - open or save box appears

Post by tom_os »

is there a nicer word then n00b out there?
I'm trying to figure my way around :)

When I click on a doc file with preview panel open, I get a message box titled "File Download" saying:
"Do you want to open or save this file"
etc (including warning about downloading files from internet!!)

so this looks like IE thinks I'm downloading this file (from my search I think IE does the preview)
I never use IE
I just checked the settings, "Security" is "medium-high", cant see anything else that might affect this...

Any tips?

Hey, don't worry about it! We were all new to XY at some time...well, except for Don, obviously! And that's what we're here for: to help when we can! 8)

The best answer I can give is to point to this prior thread on same topic: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=1540
(I just searched forum for "download" + "open")

This should be in wiki also, but I don't recall where...and if not there, maybe jacky would add it to FAQ page or Preview? As that is where most would likely look for it, I suspect.

Sorry for long delay in reply, but had PC off for a while...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Thanks, jc! So this http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 8877#18877 should be the answer. Is it, tom_os?

I did not know this either and glad of the clarification for preview. May I suggest this should be included as a totd item

So jacky, how about it? Any chance of making an entry about this on FAQ? Seeing as how it comes up now and then...

I'd do it, but you're better at it than me...

Yeah, plus it's not like the wiki was supposed to be a collaborative team work, right? :P ;)

I'll add it to the FAQ in a bit, yes.

 Well, I have contibuted to wiki, and will again, but just thought this particular item would have a better result if you were to handle it.

BTW, I see a VERY nice addition to wiki: Glossary! Good job!! :D

I just added a new term there (FF) and also put a post in TTQ&A FAQ pointing to it, as new users who come here could benefit from this also.

Hi - the instructions in the FAQ for previewing Office files don't work for Vista - there is no advanced option in the File Types control panel which would allow me to open the file in the same window. Any ideas?

I concur, there is no option like that for Windows 7 either. As a consequence, none of the Office files are previewable in the the Info tab. I too get the Open/Save pop-up. PDFs preview just fine though.

try this:
1. open regedit
2. go to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.8]
3. create a new REG_DWORD named 'BrowserFlags' and give it a value of '8'

i think the same can be done to other word and excel file types, you just have to figure out what is the right key.

Thank you for that Muroph! However, I'm not really comfortable with changing my registry in order to make one of XY's features function as intended. I hope that there is a better way that Don or someone else may be able to suggest.

EDIT: I see. The FAQ page has an entry that said that XY supports previews of all Office documents. Now that entry is gone. Also, in the feature list, it says "(except in Vista/Win7)". It's so frustrating :(
