Auto-rotate preview

Hi,
I've been playing around with photos ans noticed a problem.

Preview / Preview / Image preview : Auto-totate preview unchecked
All previews quality are OK.

Preview / Preview / Image preview : Auto-totate preview checked
- Preview window » OK
- MDBU » no rotation.
- floating preview » the photos that need to be rotated are indeed rotated and sharp, the others are blurry.

I don't know if the MBDU operation is intended, but the blurry part most certainly isn't.

I don't see any difference in sharpness. Got an example pic?

Below are 2 screen captures : the only difference between them is I changed Auto-totate preview from unchecked to checked.

Cannot confirm. What's more this image does not have any rotation flags.

Hum... After your answer, I suddenly had a thought...
Checked my wife's photos and guess what ! They display fine !
It seems this "problem" has nothing to do with XY and everything to do with some gremlins in my computer.
I'll have to investigate.

Update:

Some of my wife's photos did indeed display perfectly in floating preview and I first thought it was something in my process that caused the problem.
I did some investigating and here are my first conclusions observations. It seems to be depending on the camera make (thank you for custom columns and branch view).

When auto-rotate isn't checked,
. the floating preview is generated from reading the file : the result is good.

When auto-rotate is checked, 2 possibilities :
. the photo needs to be rotated » the floating preview is generated from reading the file : the result is good
. the photo doesn't need to be rotated » the floating preview is a blow up of the embedded thumbnail and everything is possible, depending on the said thumbnail.

The embedded thumbnail (size, geometry, ...) totally depends on the manufacturer of the camera.

There are no embedded JPGs in JPGs. What format are you talking about?

Hum... this may explain.
I've "arranged" a standard JPG photo to illustrate (for pictures clarity I unchecked Auto-rotate).
First, I extracted the embedded thumbnail from yesterday's photo and added some text.

Then I replaced the thumbnail for 'Funny photo original.jpg' by this newly created thumbnail.

The result is 'Funny photo.jpg' with a very different thumbnail

I hope it helps understanding what's happening.

I've been doing more test : there's a flaw in my previous theory because when there is NO embedded thumbnail, the floating preview is still bad and either there shouldn't be one or it should be ok...

I think he means the internal thumbnails stored in the EXIF metadata of JPGs

Its supported by Total Commander for example, here the description:
Loads thumbnails from EXIF metadata stored directly within the images.
Very fast, but the previews may be quite small in images from older cameras, e.g. 160x120 pixels.
Supports JPG as well as the following RAW formats:
Canon CRW, CR2, CR3, Fuji RAF, Nikon NEF, Olympus ORF, Panasonic RW2, Pentax PEF, Sony ARW, and Adobe digital negatives DNG.

@Horst : that's exactly what I mean. The size of the embedded thumbnail has it's importance. It seems Samsung use 512 pixel wide thumbs, and the result is acceptable. Nonetheless when Auto-rotate is checked and the photo needs rotating, the floating preview display is crystal clear, regardless of the size of the thumbnail.

@Malarki : I hadn't, but I just did . Well the issue is a bit different : the thumbnails do display the way I want, better even than in Windows explorer since XY gives us the option not to rotate them. My problem is with the floating preview that seems to be messed up by this option. I'd never checked it before because all my photos are rotated and display the "right" way.

I see that wrong thumbnail in "Funny photo.jpg" only when I use Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | Quality = Fast, but I never see any of the blurring you talk about. This embedded thumbnail does not appear anywhere else.

Can you reproduce it with a fresh instance?

I'm away from my computer right now, access to it is not easy.
What I can tell you is I've just checked remotely
Auto-rotate unchecked, thumbnail is fake one, floating preview is REAL photo : good
Autorotate checked, thumbnail is stii fake one, floating preview is thumbnail : bad

Just tested with the latest beta out of the box, same behavior.
I confirm that the fake thumb shows only in fast quality (that in itself could be unconsistent).
However, in fast quality, the thumbnail is the photo, the floating preview is.... the thumbnail !
Additional information, even if a wrong floating preview is shown, the informations displayed refers to the actual photo.

The problem isn't the thumbnail itself, it's that when auto-rotate is checked the floating preview shows it instead of the photo (at least on my computers).

I hope my explanations are understable enough (English isn't my native language).

Just to confirm the above statement, EVERY time I wrote floating preview I was talking about the hover box...
