Dragging Across Window

Post by arirish »

I apologise if this has been brought up before (I had a quick scan through), and I'd be surprised if it hasn't, but why is it, if I open a folder which contains more folders/files than can be contained on the screen, I can't drag folders/files along?

For example, if everything is arranged alphabetically, so the folder AAA was first, and I wanted to drop file ZZZ.bmp into it, I'd normally (in explorer) simply drag the file to the left of the window and it would automatically scroll along. With XYplorer, it doesn't :(

This would be really handy, and if I'm missing something here (like, if I've overlooked a really obvious option), please let me know!

I'm not sure what you mean. If you are talking about the Tree or the List, they both do support automatic scrolling when drag-hovered. :?

Please describe again...

I'm talking about the list (it works fine for me in the tree) - I can't scroll on drag-hover. Is there an option I need to set? When I move a folder to the edge of the pane, I just get a 'no go' mouse cursor!

EDIT: I should add that I'm using List view. Scrolling up and down on any other view works just fine - it's only horizontal scrolling in list view that doesn't.

Ah, List view -- yep, horizontal scrolling is not implemented there. I put it on my list.

But you use List view! I have the impression (it might be wrong) that the typical XY user goes for Details view. :)

I use List view for day-to-day actions (I have XYplorer start on computer startup), and switch to details when I'm actually doing file management. List view just...looks nicer, and I prefer left-to-right arrangement of files :S

I guess everyone's different, eh?

I tend to use List View 90% of the time; I just see no need to be presented with (and lose space to) all of that additional information throughout the course of normal activity.

This is another one of those bugs where us non-detail view users are second-class citizens since Don's using non-standard controls. :D

And the sorting?? For me, I'm clicking column headers all day long to get the latest, the biggest, the first on top... with List view I feel like blinded and paralyzed.

I just wanted to bump this annoyance, but I see I never responded to your question.

I don't find myself changing the sorting all that much. I generally prefer keeping things ordered by name, or sometimes by Date Created. In either case you have given us so many ways to change this that it's no difficulty to suit my every mood.

+ List: Added automatic horizontal scrolling when dragging over the
"List" view. I inserted a 100 ms break between each column scroll
else would be too fast to handle.
Thanks for adding it Don, but there's a few things that need adjusting.

I feel the break could be even larger than 100 ms, and it might make sense to elevate this to a user tweak now to avoid having to worry about it in the future.

How are you defining the area that triggers the scrolling - I'm guessing it's a percentage of the column width? I think it could be much smaller as it seems like it's going to be tricky dropping over a folder in the left-most column without triggering the scrolling.

Aside from that it's magnificent. :D

Okay, I see the area should best be just around 20 pixels (icon width plus some margins). Right now it's 1/4 of column width.

I raise it to 150 and see what happens.

Slightly larger than the icons sounds good.

Actually I'm not sure about the delay now. Is there some acceleration applied if you're moving the mouse or closer to the edges? I seem to be seeing it scroll faster to the left than the right, but perhaps it's just me needing to adjust.
