Icon thumbnails don't refresh.

Post by amirvf »

XYplorer: 21.30.0042

When the content of an icon file is changed, the thumbnail won't update!

To reproduce:
1. Create or download an icon file for example: C:\Test-A\Test1.ico which contains a symbol of ❤.
2. Open C:\Test-A\ folder to see the generated icon thumbnail 🢂 The thumbnail shows ❤
3. Create or download another icon file in another folder with the same name for example C:\Test-B\Test1.ico which contains a symbol of ✀.
4. Open C:\Test-B\ folder to see the generated icon thumbnail 🢂 The thumbnail shows ✀
5. Copy and overwrite C:\Test-B\Test1.ico to C:\Test-A\Test1.ico.
6. Open C:\Test-A\ folder to see the icon thumbnail 🢂 The thumbnail still shows ❤
7. View | Caches | Refresh Icons (#502) 🢂 The thumbnail still shows ❤
8. View | Caches | Refresh Thumbnails (#501) 🢂 The thumbnail still shows ❤
9. View | Caches | Refresh Selected Thumbnails (#506) 🢂 The thumbnail still shows ❤
10. Restart XYplorer 🢂 The thumbnail still shows ❤

Maybe you should provide the 2 icons to test in a zip file. This doesn't happen with other icons I have.

The icons are attached.
I use these icons for the items in the catalog.
The bug is not only for the thumbnails in the "items list". If you update the content of an icon, the icon/thumbnail (or better to say the visual appearance of item) doesn't change in the "catalog". However, correct content of the icon could be seen in the "preview pane".

The only solution to both bugs is to change the name of the icon file!

Note:
If you see the thumbnail of the corresponding PNG file (located at the right side of the ICO file), you see that it shows the correct content. So the bug is only for ICO files.

Yes, even on a refresh it appears the cache is not completely cleared and reset or refreshed to the new icon when copied over. As viewed in the preview pane the smaller size icon sizes are updated after the copy over, but the large size 256x256 is clearly not. It's still the old original picture/icon. This is probably why the thumbnail view (I was in 128x128 small thumbnail view) is incorrect whereas the icon in list and details view was fine. When I restarted XY and looked again it was still incorrect, but when I refreshed after the restart it was correctly updated. I've encountered something similar myself on occasion when dealing with icons. I'm not sure if this may be something Don can correct on a refresh or not (i.e., if when dealing with icons upon a refresh, make sure the thumbnail sizes for the icon are also updated at least for the current thumbnail view in that folder.

They go into the System Image List (aka Shell Icon Cache). I never found a way to refresh it short of a restart.

Merry Christmas!

Hope (lowly) that everybody stays at home, it's a chance. But using a chance was not en vogue in 2020.

At home here, though my girl friend (long time live with) just was tested on Tuesday because she had lost her sense of smell, was coughing a little, and was in contact with someone who later found out she was positive though has since tested negative. So we're being careful even at home...waiting for her test results. I think I'll have one of those.
