How can one remove function IDs from menu items?

I don't know what I did to cause it but I suddenly find that every menu item now shows its function ID, so for example instead of seeing "File/Open" as I did before, I now see "File/Open - #156". I do not wish to see the function IDs as they clutters up the screen. But how to remove them? I've looked in the help file, the FAQ, did a search on this forum, and tried google - but still no solution. Perhaps some kind soul on this forum can help.
