Preview the "Tour"

Post by admin »

In case your are wondering what I'm doing all the time:
http://www.xyplorer.com/tour/

It's (a bloody lot of work) work in progress, and the biggies (UDC and Scripting) are still to come...

Yes it is hard work but in my view this is what sets quality software apart from the usual mundane stuff we have come to expect, even from the giants. New prospective buyers often think any file manager, other than the OS included, is too complex but a tour such as this explains how it is used and will encourage them to have a go. With the added XYWiki, XYPlorer can now boast it is 'notable for excellence' in reliability and documentation.

From an engineers perspective I think it should be renamed XYZPlorer as it covers all dimensions.

The low price does belittle the quality of this product.

I've only looked at first two pages thus far, but you may possibly wish to use something other than "Start" as that could make one think it's a Flash thing...maybe "Begin" would be better...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Agreed. What about "index"?

Naaaa...I think Begin would be a simple substitute both in links and text body...

I'd also put a 2nd set of navigation links at bottom of each page, so user can read down, then move to next without having to scroll/page back up.

What's bad about Index? Or Contents? I find "Begin" somewhat unusual in this context.

 Because....one could say "Begin the tour" which is very similar to "Start the tour" but doesn't have the newer implication of starting up Flash or something...you'd not say "Index the tour" or "Contents the tour", would you?

Okay. Let's forget about "... the tour". Just "Index"?

Looking good :)

And I fully agree with graham, it may be lots of work but that's what sets XY apart from the rest.

Although, not that I want to give you more work or anything ;), but looking at my (use of) XY very quickly, one feature I would put some highlight on as well, is the Tree's highlighting features : Boxed Branch & Highlight Folder

They may be overlooked cause seem only to be secondary, visual "toys", or just because they can't be found elsewhere, but I know that - AFAIC - I couldn't live without them !

So many times I don't bother looking for the current path I'm in, because I don't even have have to look at the Tree, my eyes can see the background color (boxed branch) and that's all I need to know where I am !
Add to that the highlight folder, which I also use with color codes as a state indicator for some projects, and it really is very helpful!

That may be me, but I'd say those two features are killer, too!

Exactly, which is why it's bad IMO, because it may not have any Flash implications to you, but both terms have been used to begin/start/play some kind of presentation, Flash or other.

So I would say that Index is probably a better/commonly used term...

I must agree 100% with this.
Having been busy on other things I missed the start of scripting in the updates but looking at the tour so far it explains it in a language even I can follow. It may be bloody hard work for you to do this but you have just opened up XY to a whole new market and no other comparable product comes even close.

To think this is only the start of scripting - as Jackie said - awesome!

nice work with the tour and the updated help files!

but:

spotted a small typo 8) : in the scripting part you wrote "collegues" -> should be changed to "colleagues".
